Rifle Scopes For My M1A?

Hola folks. Here's another one for y'all:

I'me getting ready to scope my SA Standard Model M1A. I've heard both good and bad things about Springfield's line of scopes.

Can anyone recommend a good scope for longer range precision shooting?

I think I'd like to go with an illuminated reticle. What are your thoughts on this? How much does an illuminated dot/crosshair scope light up your face in near darkness?

What should I look for when buying a good scope? Powers, objectives, etc.

Thanks for the help. I've been shooting a long time, but I have always used iron sights. I know next to nothing about glass.

Gracias!

Again, I'm a neophyte to longer range shooting, but I want to be able to hit accurately beyond 300 yards. I need glass to go further than that due to eyesight. I wear glasses, but I still can't hit well beyond 300 using irons.

I'd like a good balance between magnification and field of view. If scopes are anything like binoculars, there are some out there that you can zoom in and tell the date mark on a quarter, but if you so much as twitch, you lose your sight picture entirely.

I'd like a good balance between the two. I'd considered going the 3rd Gen NV route, but it's too rich for my blod. I'd rather plunk down $500-ish for a good quality illuminated reticle scope.

    Thanks for the help.

Does that Tasco have an illuminated reticle of some kind?

    Evil,
I have 2 Springfeild scopes the 4-14X56 second generation for the .308, and the 4-14X40 for .223. I've had nothing but trouble with the 4-14X56, its at the shop for the 4th time ... 4 different problems over the last 4 years ... I think for the price range your looking you can get a much better scope, with a better rep. I will say this for Springfield, they are prompt with getting it repaired, but thats not really the point is it?

None of the Tasco SS scopes have lighted retical, they are all mil-dot, I have a 20X and love it ... I'm going to get another as soon as I can. Also CDNN has some great prices (in the price range you've stated) on some Kahles and Hensoldt scopes right now, but they don't have the lit retical eirther, check them out here: www.cdnninvestments.com

The lighted reticle seems to be all the rage these days. Speaking as someone that has had 2 of them, to me they seem to be a gimic for scope-makers to charge outragous prices for somthing that is of little to no practical use for the average shooter ... as a night "sniper" I could see where they would be benifical but thats not me. Look at it this way, if there isn't enough light on your target to allow you to see your cross hairs, are you sure you want to take the shot? I think thats some kind of rule ... "Know your target and whats beyond it."

I had a lighted reticle scope. I never even turned it on unless it was to showw of the crosshairs. Got along just fine after I got rid of it to. I ain't sayin' you don't need one, just that you can use that extra dough to get a Burris or something.

Them little mini chem lights will light up your reticle if'n you squeeze one into the objective lens Bell housing. Not sure why you need such if you buy good glass you'll be able to see plenty in LOW light, though not in NO light. In NO light, man should rest.....
