    I like the .308 better.

This is only my opinion and I know opnions mean nothing but here it is, .308s are nothing more than a hotrodded 30-30 in my book. The best thing to happen to them is when the .308 was necked down to accept either a .243 or .284 bullet. If I was to get a .30 in that range I would stick with the 30-06. Buy a .270, 7mm-08 or a .243 for that class of gun.

Politicians are like diapers, every so often you need to change them, for obvious reasons.

Gotta agree with 7mm........the 30-06 is so dang versatile, and my opinion the better choice, however I guess between the 2 you mentioned..hmmmI'd go with the 270.....L.H.

I agree with the others. I like the 30.06 over the .308, but that is not what you asked, and I only replied to the question you asked. There are more variations of loads for the 30.06, and you can find ammo at any country hardware store.

But of the two you asked about, I still like the .308 better.

If I had to choose between the two I would opt for the .308,its considered the minimum with guides for Elk hunting. It has several bullet offerings and there is alot of non corrosive surplus ammo to be had cheap for the .308.And most of all its excellant for white tails but so is the .270.Good Luck!!

Better for what? I think choice would depend on intended game, terrain and shooting distance. Factory ammo and reloading is cheaper for .308; .270 is inherently more accurate. For white tails at 200 yards or less, it's not worth wringing your hands over the difference.

I too am a 308 fan.The variety and availabity of ammo alone would get my vote. As DWS says, within any reasonable distance either will do.As to accuracy, DWS is just not a very good shot and is not the one to ask about inherent accuracy-Bob

Au contraire. Jeff Cooper was so taken with my shooting at Gunsite that he overfilled both his drool cup and Depends.

I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood. I had heard that Jeff told his students that when you were shooting the safest place to stand was between you and the target.I'll have to check my sources.

Cooper's vanishing lucidity has prompted many bizarre statements like this. Recently, while discussing the merits of the S&W 629 Mountain Gun at a meeting of the Marine Corps League Women's Auxiliary, he dropped trou and began yelling "This is my Mountin' Gun! This is my Mountin' Gun!", not once making use of the imperial we.

    Thanks ODT, nice people here

juju you're right!! I'll be quiet[but gnats do fear me and my gun at any distance]I like those 30 mags also. My personal favorite is the 308 Norma Mag-longer neck holds the bullet real good.

Before answering your question I would ask where are you hunting and what game are you hunting? If you are doing a lot of walking then I would suggest a light rifle with a short action and short barrel and it would only be in 308 caliber as the 270 doesn't fit the short criteria. The 270 is a fine cartridge but comes in a larger package.

Why don't you get the very best of both worlds and buy a .30-06? Beach

I would have to say the .270 on this one. After me shooting a .270 during deer season and pabooger shooting his .308 during deer season, I would much rather have the .270![:D]

I'm in favor of the 308 (first high power , biased) , but the 270 , 308 , and 30-06 in any of these calibers you "can't go wrong" .

I would take the flatter shooting 270, especially if your are going to be taking some long range shots at deer.

Page 79 of the September '03 issue of Guns and Ammo might give you the answer to your question. It ranks the .270 as the "perfect deer cartridge" (author's opinion, I've yet to shoot mine). It gives some pretty convincing information.
