In your own words, define stereotype...

...as it pertains to people/race.
To me, a stereotype is a generalization of a race that has come about because a MAJORITY of the people in that race act in a certain way. If this weren't the case, there wouldn't be any stereotypes. It's a reputation. While it is not 100% accurate to label the entire race based on the actions of a MAJORITY of the population of people within that race, the MAJORITY has set the reputation for the entire race which includes the minority of that population, and you then have a stereotype. Again, it's not 100% accurate to portray every person within a certain race as being a certain way simply because of the actions of the MAJORITY of people within that race; however, it's better, in my opinion, to err on the side of caution when dealing with those people who have a negative stereotype associated with them. Screw being PC. A good person is a good person in my book, and a bad one is a bad one REGARDLESS of race, but, I'll still err on the side of caution.

My stereotype is Kenwood. I used to have a Sony, but it burned up.
I'm partial to Alpine and Pioneer myself. [:D]

Is Alabama a race? Yes, I did say "as it pertains to people/race" but I'm talking mainly about race here...

People in the sense of people in general... i.e. human beings. Race as it pertains to ethnicity. I knew that I should have just stated race to avoid confusion, but hindsight is 20/20.
I don't have to be 100% correct or accurate. [8D]

YOU'RE RACIST!!!! [:D][:o)][:D]
I actually agree with your first post only I would put the word minority everywhere the word majority is used. The media, ALL forms helps to develop "stereotypes"...the public hears it enough and it becomes fact. There is my 2 cents on the subject. And I will let this thread take shape with no further input.
Ok, that's some good input there, and I believe I'll stay hands off for a bit and let the topic take shape as well.
White people can't dance.
Asians are studious.
Black people are lazy.
Black people have sub-normal intelligence.
Jews are greedy.
Jews are good business people.
Liberals are stupid.
Conservatives lack compassion.
Scholars are inept.
Laborers are dumb.

Must disagree.
A stereotype is an oversimplified opinion, or rather an illusion, as it relates to the behavior of a group of people one is unfamiliar with, and is based not on the actions of a silent majority, but rather on the way a loud minority is perceived to behave.
Let's take for example "system analysts". I personally have had little, if any, personal contact with a systems analyst, however, have been exposed to many of them "nerds" through Hollywood movies. My ideal vision of a systems analyst is a highly intelligent, but narrow minded individual lacking any and all social skills and sense of fashion. They may fantasize about having the prowess of a tiger, however, would not be able to deal with ice cream upon a real life encounter. In short, THE MAJORITY of systems analysts (in my narrow minded opinion) are social morons.
Now please tell me: I'm I accurate in my description of systems analysts, or am I once again sadly mistaken?

That is a stereotype, and it is incorrect. It is not that a majority act a certain way, it is that the selective perception is that they do, which has nothing to do with how they actually act.
The stereotype says nothing accurate about its target, but speaks volumes about its perpetrator.
So let's have a good discussion.

If you accept stereotyping as valid, then this post is not about stereotyping. Joe

He used this analogy. "If I ask you for a cup of coffee, and you bring me one in a small paper dixie cup, then you have given me what I asked for; however, you failed to accept a stereotype. Naturally you know that when I asked for a cup of coffee, that I meant a small cup with a handle on it. You have never been told that, but through similar experience you know what it should be. We all stereotype everyday. It's how we draw conclusions when we don't have 100% of the information, but have similar experiences to draw upon."
