quote:(CBS 5 NEWS) - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced that approximately 100 volunteer posse and Sheriff's Deputies will soon begin randomly patrolling the desert areas and main roadways in southwest Maricopa County as a part of an operation to curb the flow of illegal immigrants entering the county.

Now, if all the bordering county sheriffs would follow in suit, maybe a dent could be made in the problem.

quote:Arpaio says today his deputies so far have made seven anti smuggling cases in the last few weeks alone and that 120 illegals have been arrested and jailed.

Arpaio houses 10,000 prisoners in his jails, including almost 2000 in a tent city he erected in 1993. Tent City is being expanded to hold an anticipated increase in of inmates being incarcerated in the Maricopa County jails.

Nice idea but it's obvious the closest any CBS reporters have gotten to Maricopa County is Chicago ... maybe Las Vegas!

As one who has spent a fair amount ot time out there in the last 40 years, it's a lot like trying to sweep back the surf with a puch broom.

Sure - they can round up as many as they like but what are they going to do with them - call ICE? LOL What are they going to do when ICE doesn't come? ... file a complaint to the Feds? Who's going to foot the housing, food and increased guard costs, hiring, etc.?

I'll bet you don't hear much about this guy anymore.

    Sounds good, though. [8D]

I don't know that I agree with you. People have been saying this guy's career has been short-lived for years now. Is this the same guy who makes the prisoners wear pink? Isn't this the guy who refuses to give his prisoners anything more than the basic food needs each day? I remember the "tent city" quite well, and remember the national outcry to have the guy thrown out of office. If the other two citations that I've provided are the same sheriff, they were crying for his ouster then, too.

My guess is that his constituents LOVE the guy, and his constituents are the only ones that count. But, FWIW, if he was the sheriff of my county, I'd gladly volunteer for his reelection campaign.

the illegals will figure out where his guys are and go around them. He may catch a few and would have caugth alot more if it werent announced on the news....why do humans feel the need to tell everyone everything? most are like seagulls when they find a french fry they start squaking till some bigger bird kicks their butts and takes it away. It's about damn time somebody starts doing something like that. I agree with spaniel in that the rest of the border counties (and states) should follow suit.
