i have a flat silver metal medalian about 4" OD. it looks like a coin, only huge. engraved on only one side is a well dressed man w/o a hat walking a little girl who is holding a piggy bank in her hands. both are passing in front of a circa 30's/40's style automobile. there are two chain attaching holes on either side (like something that would hang on a wine bottle.) Q: what does this say?:"KAVALIER AM STEUER"...below it in small print is:"DIE ABENDZEITUNG" on the back is a very small mfg stamp in the metal, which might be pewter. it says:"GESSHLER, MUNSHEN." Q: is this german? Q:what does it say? Q: what is this thing? thanks!

    Yes, this is German.

KAVALIER AM STEUER = Cavalier at the Tax

DIE ABENDZEITUNG = The Evening News

    GESSHLER, MUNSHEN = ???

I called my Austrian mother for help translating but she wasn't home. That's the best I can do.

I'm not sure what the item you possess is. Good luck!

KAVALIER AM STEUER = More Kavalier to tax

DIE ABENDZEITUNG = The evening paper

GESSHLER, MUNSHEN = sounds like a location to me

Yes it's German, no idea what it is, and I can't really guarantee I know what I'm talking about when it comes to German.

    KAVALIER can also mean Gentlemen.

GESSHLER, MUNSHEN appears to be proper name.
    Minshew is a family name

Hey just wondering where did you get this thing, and if you could post a picture of it maybe that would help a little, My brothers' wife is German, and they spend quite a bit of time over there.

Gesshler, Munshen should be a place..

The Gesshler would be the city or town in the Munich area.
Munshen would be the old spelling of M?nchen, which is Munich in the english wa of spelling/pronouncing it.

this old 486 isnt camera port capable. it will be soon or else id be bombing you all with pics of everything i do and talk about. so....it looks like this plate was A: made in an area of munich. B: the plate depicts a well to do 'gentleman' and 3: the title has something to do with well to do gentlemen being taxed 4: and it involves a newspaper. hmmm....sounds political to me. anyone know german history - post war and maybe post marshall law? is or was taxation a serious german problem? was or is taxation a problem worth making medalions to commemorate? the mystery is still on!
