Was looking at gun stuff on Fleabay this morning when GB was down and came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6629897896&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

The guy claims the navy converted several thousand Garands to 7.62 NATO.

Any of you guys or gals ever seen one? I know there are a couple of outfits making/converting them now, but how about back in the day?

Yes they did. i think they even used an addapter sleeve, kind of like the cartridge converters. The sleeve was slipped into the chamber and seated somewhat permanently by firing a round.

Yes they did, and they are still used for gay pride parades and drill team competitions aboard ship. As one salty chief explained, "Honestly, you just can't twirl an M16 thanks to that pesky mag well, and an M14 does not have the same 'Yeah, we got thirteen buttons on our pants for a reason, and that reason is foreplay' attitude that we seamen (God, I love that word) care to exhibit."

Ouch. No need to get nasty. I was just reporting what the old salt said. Frankly, I never understood the tradition of the thirteen buttons in front when the back was held together by velcro. Say, you weren't Orion aircrew by any chance? Those ladies were the biggest bunch of flaming size queens in the Navy.

    I've heard of it.

The Navy contracted with H.P. White Laboratories in Maryland to have a special chamber insert built to allow the Garand to use the NATO cartridge.
