I have a mak-90 and was wondering if it is legal to put a straight stock and pistol grip on it. Thumbhole stocks are lame.

I've been wondering about that too, since all these Romanians are coming in with the old configuration. Maybe it depends what state you're in. Thumbholes are even lamer if you're a left-hander like me. I'd never buy one anyway, but still....

As is you can not LEGALLY put a pistol grip on your MAK-90,go to the following address concerning legality issues.
    http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user...falist/law.html
Letter # 24 covers the parts of a AK rifle. You can only have 10 imported parts in your rifle if you want to add a pistol grip.
US made parts available are stock, handguards, pistol grip, hammer, trigger, sear, gas piston, mag follower, and mag floor plate.
All the above US parts are pretty much drop in with a little minor fitting(sandpaper) on the stock/handguards. The gas piston requires you to drive out a pin to unscrew it and then replace the pin, peening it so it won't come out.

    PERMISSION DENIED
That site says that I am unauthorized to view their stuff.
Is there a site devoted to selling all that junk so people can un-lame their mak-90s?

Hey, lucky you! :-) I'm an expert on this. I just converted over my
Chinese Mak 90 to a pistol grip stock. I got a "made in the USA"
walnut stock for about $90. from
Soupbowl Enterprises. It is really nice quality. Josey is right about the ten imported parts. I replaced the trigger group, hammer, disconnector, gas piston, magazine follower and floorplates and stock with completely "made in the USA" parts. I think I only have about 7-8 of the imported parts in the firearm now. Thumbhole stocks do look very bad.

Exactly Bean,it is not so much increasing the USA parts as it is DECREASING the imported parts that makes the pistol grip legal.

Go to WalMart and get the latest issue of "shotgun news." Many of the gun dealers that advertise in there sell the "made in the USA" trigger group parts you'll need to install. You can also get them at TAPCO.COM
for $40. You don't have to necessarily install the "made in the USA" gas piston if your section 922 (R) parts are 10 or less. The parts that you must count as foreign are listed at Soupbowl.com and many other places on the web.
