shot my new Russian AK today

I finally received the new production Russian AK I ordered 3 months ago. The furniture isvery hard black plastic. It has a molded pistol grip. The gas tube appears to be integrated into the upperhand guard as one piece. The lower hand guard is tapered for a goodgrip when firing. The front sight is a split ring that is open rather than the closed circle front sight used by some AK's. The left side receiver has a bar andgroove of some kind attached which I assume is for mounting a scope. It comes with a 30 round magazine. My model is listed as a 20 inch barrel but the last 2 inches of that is actually a muzzle brake that has been welded onto the gun.On first firing I noted the magazines were a bit hard to get in at first. The split circle front sight confused me a little as I mistook the left sideof the split front sight for the front sight pin. (I like a full circle front sight). The gun smoked a little but I assume this is normal. Upon firing it was easy to use and had no noticable kick. At 25 yards with a bench rest every round was a bullseye but at 100 meters I was way off Target (partly due to my eyes) and had to adjust the sights again. All in all I like the firearm and it seems to be a good buy for the$300. I paid for it. Anyone else used one yet?

Its a good gun ,but 20 inch B is a little short for thoose Long shots ,muzzle brake must be changed to fit a "compensator" to get thoose close groups you want. A good and reliable gun for $300. sure beats a M16s in economics.

I like to rock n' roll with my AK's, so I tend to melt synthetic stocks in a hurry!I'd recommend replacing the plastic stock with wood as soon as possible.Other than that, nice buy at $300!

Thanks guys. To answer the question it is a new production Russian Ak available in 3 calibers, 7.62, 3.8 and .223. I got it from Federal Arms Corporation but others are also selling it.

beantole,Did you get a chance to rapid fire through a few 30 or 40 round clips with it yet?As I understand it, it is made by the factory that makes the Saiga (with enough US parts installed to make the pistal grip legal); and all the pictures I see, it looks like the forward grip is the same as the Saiga. On the Saiga, heat build-up is excessive at the front grip if 50 to 60 rounds is put through it fast--I had to modify mine to deal with the heat.I'm just curious if the same problem occurs with yours?(And that side rail is a scope rail--East Block quick detach style.)

competentone: You may be right on the excessive heat if one "bump" or fires rapidly with the firearm, I don't know. I have another AK with the standard wood handguard that I will use for any rapid firing. Actually, I really think one could get away with rapid firing one 30 round mag with no problem with overheating but I would not go beyond that.
