FBI seeking special agent candidates2002-01-25As a result of the FBI's realignment after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the bureau is seeking qualified, competitive candidates for the 900 special agents it plans to hire before October. Special agent applications The adjustment is designed to enhance the FBI's ability to better address terrorism and homeland security, the bureau said in a statement this week. Applicants can have one of a variety of backgrounds including computer science or information technology, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, military intelligence, aviation, foreign counterintelligence, explosives and foreign language. The agency is especially interested in those with the knowledge of Arabic, all dialects of Chinese, Farsi, Pashtu, Urdu, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Russian and Vietnamese. Upon completion of the 16-week training, special agents will earn a salary of more than $50,000. To qualify for training, applicants must be a U.S. citizen 23 to 36 years old and be available for assignment anywhere in the United States. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and be in excellent physical condition. Candidates also must have graduated from a four-year accredited college or university and have at least three years of full-time work experience.     What is this crap? "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?"The FBI is a step up from the ATF, but they're cut from the same cloth when you get down to it.

    I'm not so sure. In fact I'm not sure the ATF should have an enforcement arm at all. Frankly I'd like to see them turned into an administrative agency who turns "infractions" over to an true law enforcement agency -- assuming they survive at all. There's been some talk that the BATF has outlived its usefulness to American democracy. I can't help wondering when was the last time they busted down somebody's door (or burned their compound) over tobacco...
