New York-AP -- The Pentagon says environmental laws are getting in the way of military training. So, military leaders reportedly want Congress to approve some exceptions to those laws. The New York Times reports that the bill they want would allow the military to disregard sections of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and several other environmental safeguards.Large parts of firing ranges are off limits to training because certain animals live there or because bombing practice would harm the air or water.According to the report, the military spends some four (b) billion dollars a year to comply with environmental laws. It says it could better spend that money on preparing troops for combat.Environmental groups plan a meeting in the coming week to figure out how to fight the proposal.
