mine may be a little bit strange to you....but when the crap gets deep sometimes i like to listen to music really loud either in pickup or house . last few days off playing NO Doubts last CD i got with the song Its my life really loud or other songs just seems to do it for me.
my home stereo volume knob is broke so i cant turn it up and blast the wife's things off the wall [:)]
Also taking a snowmobile and running it hard and as fast as it can go also does wonders.
the ultimate getaway for me would be sitting on a Super stock tractor pulling tractor you know the diesel ones with a few staged turbos screaming and a ton of black diesel smoke going straight up into the air with rear wheels spinning 50-60 mph makeing a hell of a lot of horse power [:D]of cource it would be a John Deere tractor[:D]

so what does it for you guys?

pa - I hear ya. I just got a call from my spousal unit. Seems she would like for me to take stress away from her when I get home. So I am going to take stress and go for a drive and let her have some alone time. I think it mostly has to do with the two new teeth that stress has coming in. Stress get kind of clingy when she doesn't feel good.

Talk about stress...we thought for the past couple of days that we might be adding more stress to the family soon (seems we weren't as careful with some stress relief last month), but found out this morning that we won't be adding more stress. Boy did that make dad's stress level go down.

    1. sex (seriously, I'm not being crude - unless the source of the said stress is the significant other)
    2. spending time outdoors alone (for me fishing is better than hunting for this purpose)
    3. shooting
    4. working, something as physical as I can do works the best...

cowdoc - I know what you mean about the financial stress. We had a broiler-breeder operation growing up (about 8500 hens and 1500 or so roosters) in one of those huge mechanized poultry houses. Anyway, Dad ended up having to sell everything but the building, lots of reasons, but that business is tough.

Anyway, he has been looking for a way to use the building to make the payments on it, so he is refitting it right now to raise calves he is going to be buying from somewhere down in Texas and trucking them up here to Missouri. He is rushing to get the work done so he can take advantage of the obscenely low prices right now. He said that he will be paying about $25 a head when he goes down here real soon. The average price goes up when you figure in mortality during transport (I didn't realize it could be so high) but he's pretty excited about it.

Anyway, we have basically a small truck farm - sweet corn, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, lots of different fall produce. We used to have a decent sized hog operation when I was littler, but had a hard time making against some of the "big boys" - and the fact that half of the farrowing barns burned during a bad winter.

Dad just retired last year from teaching ag all his life at a rural school. He always just wanted to farm, but had to teach to make enough to support us all. Now he's getting retirement, and can farm full-time, but it's still tough to make a go of it. He is something of a carpenter/craftsman, and has been making a little money with that, but his heart is in farming.

In my opinion, it is about finding a niche these days. You can't compete head to head with the likes of Tyson, so you have to get creative. Like the local beef co-op you were talking about.

As far as stress relief - I'm going to spend the 1st-5th back on the farm just helping dad out and relaxing with my girls. Look at it this way - your occupation is more rewarding that most others - even if you are barely breaking even. At least I think so. I'd farm if I thought I could make it, but all I have is 50 acres back home next to my parent's farm. Not a lot to work with, so I'll just keep it rented.

I used to get away from stress by jumping out of airplanes then I made a business of it and my ex started jumping. After that my stress reliever was a stress inducer.

After the truck accident and operations I had no stress just pain and that was stress relieved by copious amounts of morphine. It was starting to get too stressfull being doped up all the time dealing with the rehab and pain then I found GunBroker.

After finding GunBroker I kicked the morphine and got back into shooting big time which keeps the pain in check. These days an evening reloading, a day shooting or hunting, and plowing a field takes care of any stress that may come my way.

    Doc,,
Do ya have a shooting range set up somewhere on the home place???
Have ya a safe spot with metal targets set up at different distances.
(To me it's a stress reliever just making these targets from scrap laying 'round the place)
Have ya a truck gun,,,iron sights,,(no sissy pants scope[;)]),,then when you get a little stressed out go to your shootin' spot and practice hitting the plates[^]!!
Aint nothing that makes a feller feel better than hearing the bullet ring the metal plate[8D].

My biggest stress relief is to go out to the Texas hill country and getting away from this business and the dam phone. DOnt have to worry about bil lpaying out there. It is so quiet out there that it usually takes me a full day to get my ears adjusted to the sound of no sound. It literally hurts my ears the first day because it is so quiet!! I also like huntin on a creek near my home, thousands of acres of land to walk around on without another person to worry with. Cant wait till thursday the 1st, i am gonna go back and relieve some more stress!!

I make an infusion of rose, or lavender...put few drops of oil,
in steaming bowl of water. Light some candles, fill the bathtub,
soak. Put on a tape of solitudes, ocean or forest sounds, and
lay back and relax to the soothing sounds and quiet candlelight
and wonderful aroma's. I guarantee this will calm your stress.

I go out to the family farm and sit in the woods or take a walk in the fields. Just being there takes me back to when I was a kid working on the place.Only now I take the time to enjoy the place and watch the wildlife. I slow down and watch the corn grow.

    1) Call in sick to work (stress factory)
    2) grab the nearest gun and plenty of ammo,
    3) fire up the Harley and head for the hills.
    4) Sex works too, especially when combined with #1
    5) winning a giveaway on Gunbroker (not sure if this would really work as I'm 0 for 7) [;)]

Has to be the shooting bench or hunting!! If at night when the stress really hits then it's the reloading room! I used to have a poster in my dorm room that I wish I had for my office! It had two old vultures up in a dead tree overlooking a barren desert with a few old cow bones around. One of the vultures says to the other one: "Patience hell!!! I'm gonna kill something!!!" Nothing like a few good "bangs" and little bitty groups in a piece of paper to lift you up! Unless it's a long shot at a varmint! GHD

I have found the best way in the summer is to spend a day on the lake in the boat fishing. Winter time taking a ride in the mountains or just going hunting. There, nobody calls you on the phone, is complaining or talking into your ear with stuff that absolutely bores you to tears. I also enjoy blasting holes in paper with one of my toys.

    Ahhhhhh....peace and quite[^]

Rapid semi-auto fire at metal targets!!!!!![:D][:D][:p][:p]
If ya have no targets, then see how long ya can keep a bump fire going![:D][8D]
Long ride with loud driving music!!!!!!!
Then there is the inadvertant 'stress relief' - too much booze, kindly administered by innocent friend. Wake up very relaxed, with a clean slate, assuming there was someone there to take care of your blitzed self. [:I] Do not repeat. This is only 'once in a lifetime' stress relief!

First I TRY to be rational and determine the source of stress. Then I make a change to get away from it, and if I cannot, I accept it.

Often I use one of the following mantras:

"I will not let this job kill me."

"No matter how bad it gets, they can't shoot me, and even if they do, they can't eat me."

May sound corny, but Prayer is the only thing that removes the worst of all stress factors in my life. It even helps me accept some of the stress that I can not get away from. Often I have to remind myself there is nothing on this world that can really hurt me so I should not be stressing about it.

Remember guys and gals this little ditty I came up with when I was hospitalized 9 years ago for 2 1/2 months: "Pain is good. It lets me know I still am alive."
