cut grass! and when you mow your lawn with tall grass, not only will it get shorter, but the lawnmower will park itself in the garage, like the guy at Earl May tells all his customers.

I've been using a battery powered lawnmower for seveal years. But we moved to another place with a little more lawn and its just getting to be too much trouble.

I've got plenty of batteries to take me through the job, but the cutting width just isn't big enough. And it takes too much time to do all the walking thats involved.

So I've got it narrowed down to a John Deere or a Husky.

Deere has a B&S, Husky has a Honda.
Both have variable speed front wheel drive.
JD is a little bit more pricey.

I was leaning toward the Deere when the sales guy tells me "this is the last year that Deere is going to be in the homeowner lawn mower line" which (if true) clinches it for me. I'll take a pass rather than search around for replacement parts in 5 years for whatever breaks.

    Advice?

What type and size do you use? Around my place I have a John Deere l
awn tractor for the "back 40" and a Honda for the small cut in work.

Hey grab1, we are on our third new Sears 42 in. tractor, also use a Jacobsen 70 in. greens mower on three regulation bent grass greens, and a National 72 fairway mower for the rest of the 5 acres. and all this is next to the shooting area. For the money, we have had very good luck with the Sears mowers.

I have a 8N Ford tractor with a 6' finish mower and two old John Deere riders. The combined age of tractor and operator is 114 years.
It still does a very good job of mowing. I bought this tractor when I was 25 years old for $375.00 with three pieces of equiptment.(62 now)
Next to my guns I have enjoyed this tractor about as much.

Poor 'ole wife has a Honda walk behind.
I ride, she walks. She's slimmer.
Guess we should swap for a while.

Hmm. Offhand... a Black and decker Electric cord model (don't use it often) a Rally 3.5 HP, about 12 years old, works great, a Tecumseh 3.5 about 15 years old also works great but is hard starting if it has sat a while, a Sears manual push mower (no engine just rotating blades) and a Craftsman 1964 3.5 hp that needs a new engine head, muffler, magneto, spark plug wire, and gaskets (my project for next winter).

Our gun club has two 900 Ford's with 6' Wood's finish mowers....we mow about 30 acres of our 80 acre park. Takes two guys about a day to mow it...

My yard at home is pretty small, takes about 15 minutes with a push mower.

Bought a new 19.5 horse craftsman 3yrs ago. I will not buy another. No I haven't had that many problems but man this thing is loose. I plan on buying a dixon, kubota, deer, next year. Any suggestions ? I cut about 2 acres. The rest gets brush hogged :)

Well my old Murray is about 12 years old (18 hp 46" deck) and has been rebuilt a couple of times. I am thinkin on a John Deere of the same size to mow the 2 acres around here. I would like the Cub Cadet, and the solid drive shaft, but they will not move from the list price of $3,499.00. So I go back to thinkin of the John Deere 2166.

Bought a new John Deere in may 1987 12.5 horse Kawasaki engine. I have 1.5 acres to mow twice a week, kids drove it around for hours at a time, moved the boat with it, mowed over small trees, bag leaves and crunch up dead small limbs. Replaced 1 set of blades, 1- spark plug, 2- belts, and 1- muffler. It still runs as it did when new.

In '98 I bought a Statesman from Southern States. It is made by MTD the same company that makes Yard Machines and maybe others. It is not exactly what you would call top of the line or anything but it has served me well. It is a 16.5 hp Briggs with a 42" deck. I mow about 6 acres total once every 2 weeks. I also am clearing some more land and it has been used for a brush hog as well as a mower. I am on my 4th set of blades from catching stumps that I didnt get quite short enough and numerous flat tires from thorns. Other than that it has been flawless. Well worth the $999.
I know a John Deere or something would probably be better but for 1/4 the price if this one goes I can still go get 3 more before I spend as much. Not a great mower but good bang for the buck.

We got an old Ford Jubilee Mrs Pel's dad bought when she were just a toddler (She named it 'Sugerfoot')
A very old Yazoo 24" cut commercial pushmower . Very dangerous, has no front or side guards. Mrs. Pel got the side of her foot when we was clearing off down here at the creek.
Got a year old Snapper'Z' rider. Great mower, if you got a lawn. I'm gonna sell it cause it is just not suitable to my terrain. An expensive lesson.
When I sell the Snapper I want to get a small tractor (thinking Kubota) with a belly mower and turf tires. My neighbor has a 3 cyl Kubota diesel that is about 2/3 the size of my Ford Jubilee. He seems to get real good service out of it. Anybody out there got any experience with something along these lines?

I have a 4 HP MTD push mower that's about 8 years old and i do 1 acre with it every week. Yes i push mowe one acre. But i love doing it and it's cheaper than going to the gym. Well only problem i have was the starter spring broke. That was a quick fix. They are ok mowers but it was nothing like the snapper my dad has. I paid 130 for it so i think i got a good deal. Maybe when i

    Pelican,
That 53 Ford Jubilee is probably one of the best tractors Ford made. Why not put turf tires and a belly mower on it. (see link)

Well lets see, 2 sears 15hp, 42". 1 Snapper 11hp 36" that works great for picking up the leaves from the oak tree, one John Deere, 9hp that I just got, havent't even started yet. And I just traded some plants for a Sears 13HP, that I will have to drag home one day soon. And one 22" 5 hp push mower that I am going to make my daughter start using more if she doesn't quit tearing up the rest of them.

Pelican, I also have a Ford 1100 four wheel drive, 2 cylinder diesel that was built in 1978. It has been run hard and put away wet way too many times. Has cleared several friends properties over the years. Most people just don't believe it will do what it will. Only thing wrong with it, is I need one twice that size, or bigger, since I am fixing to buy 26 acres up in Ga.(Like I need more grass to mow...)

Needed a riding mower in a hurry so bought an older used, as is, Sears Craftman LT 4000 12hpB&S w/38"cut for $300 in good condition from a retired fellow who tinkers with and resells trade-ins from a local dealer. I was a little skeptical but after mowing 2 1/2 acres of tall thick and wet grass on hilly terain with no problems I am a little impressed. Wanted to get a 18 + hp Whell Horse, Cadet or JD to do the job but could not wait or afford the extra bucks at the time. We will see how the Sears makes out for the rest of the mowing season.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

I used to work in a Jacobsen lawnmower shop - they are the best if you ask me. And I've worked on most everything. I bought a rebuilt on for $20 and mowed lawn all over town for many years. I t was still working very well when I gave it away before moving to Canada. It was probably 30 years old.

Since coming to the North country and having a small lawn, I've gone to a Sunbeam electric - horror of horrors for a Jacobsen man! But I've used the old thing for the last 25 years and only replaced the two belts once and one wheel!

I say go cheap on the mowers and use your money for hunting and guns!

Five months is a long time in FL. I mowed grass from the first of March to the end of November growin' up. (big * yard and that 15 year old Briggs motor just WOULD NOT DIE!)

1954 International C with a Wood's 59 belly mower. Woods mowers are made in Oregon, IL which is 15 miles up the road from me. Paid $1700 for the set in 1983 and mowed a heck of a lot. I use a 22" self propelled K-Mart for around the house. I have to say that a decent self-propelled will really cover alot of ground cheaply.

Just yesterday bought a new Cub Cadet walk-behind. 6.5 HP, 6-speed transmission, rear drive and swivel, caster-type wheels on the front so the thing will turn on it's own length without having to pop the front-end off the ground.

Now the ol' lady will have such an easy time mowing she'll still be able to wax my pickup when she's done with the yard work.

I have an Ariens rear bagger/self prop. I would not recommend it to anyone. My lawn here in town is 75 X 160 and every year I have to replace the driven wheel because it is a cheap POS. and wears out very fast. I am thinking about getting a yardman.
