New Gun Fires 'Laser of Lead' By Stewart Taggart 2:00 a.m. Sep. 28, 2001 PDT SYDNEY, Australia -- It may not be ready for George Bush's "first war of the 21st century." But it may well be ready if there's a second. In perhaps the most audacious upgrade of high-speed weaponry since the introduction of the Gatling Gun, Australian inventor Mike O'Dwyer has developed a machine gun that can fire bullets at a rate of 1 million rounds per minute.

Who was it that was looking for a missle defense system? What other possible use would something like this have? Sure would like to know what kind of barrel system can take that rate of fire . . . or perhaps that's a 'technical issue' to be addressed at a later date . . . .

A slight bit of overkill I would think. Just a 3 second burst would fire 50,000 rounds. Maybe some targets need a few thousand hits to kill. Stick with the Neutron Bomb. Do it all with one shot.

Actually, I think that this gun was developed as a ship-board anit-missle weapon. The mini-gun presently in use is good, but the missles move so fast that there is only a fraction of a second for the gun to hit it. This new gun increases the amount of bullets going out, and therefore increases the chance of a hit. Coupled with the new integrated battlefield technology, it could be quite a powerful weapon. Still a while before it makes it into the field, though.

1 million rds /minute would put one hell of a curtain of fire.

Josey 1 et al,On the curtain of fire, I've read about a simpler ship protection version that puts a high explosive in the water in front of the missile at a precise time, causing the missile to hit the sheet of water from the explosion- a simple idea, and probably alot cheaper, and one round per shot.
