Boy drinks lye, burns mouth, tongue, esophagus; mother charged
Tulsa, Oklahoma-AP -- A seven-year-old Oklahoma boy suffered severe burns -- after mistaking lye used for making methamphetamine for water.
The boy's mother has been jailed on drug and child endangerment charges.
The lye was in the refrigerator. Police say lye is often used as a binder to hold the chemicals used to make methamphetamine together in a tablet form.
The boy suffered severe burns on his lips, tongue and esophagus. Two of his friends were with him when he drank the lye, and they quickly washed his mouth out with water. That limited the severity of the burns.
