Salt Lake City-AP -- The leader of a secretive Utah polygamist sect who may have had as many as 75 wives has died.

R. Scott Berry, attorney for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, says Rulon Jeffs was either 92 or 93.

Berry says Jeffs died yesterday of natural causes at Dixie Medical Center in St. George, Utah.

Jeffs' church has thousands of members, mostly in the twin border communities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.

The sect has been the target of allegations of welfare abuse and forced marriages of teenage girls.

The Mormon church abandoned polygamy a century ago, but tens of thousands of people continue to practice it. Those who belong to the church are excommunicated when their beliefs become known.
