Theft try at Rossford store alleged
A daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali has a scheduled appearance in Perrysburg tomorrow - in front of a judge.
Hana Yasmeen Ali, 26, of Berrien Springs, Mich., is identified in a Rossford police report as the woman accused of trying to shoplift bedding items Thursday from Linens & Things in the Crossroads Centre on U.S. 20.
Store personnel, who called police about 4 p.m., reported that the woman also tried to tamper with a price tag on a $69.99 picture frame.
Ms. Ali, who wrote More than a Hero, a book about her father, is one of nine children of the former heavyweight boxing champion. Another daughter, 24-year-old Laila Ali, is also a boxer.
Rossford po|lice Officer Craig Revill, who interviewed the shop|lifting suspect after she was confronted by store managers, said she identified herself to him as the daughter of Muhammad Ali. After she made a telephone call, a member of the Ali family called to inquire about the incident, the officer said.
Other than that, he said, "she didn't have much to say" about the second-degree misdemeanor charge of attempted theft which she faces. She also was charged with having no operator's license, although it was not immediately clear why her license was not valid.
Officer Revill said Ms. Ali didn't say why she was in the area. "My impression was that she was just passing through," he said.
A store clerk became suspicious, in part, because the bags of linens carried by Ms. Ali felt heavy, police said. When store personnel opened the bags, they found several other bedding items inside. The price tag on a picture frame was hand-written and its Universal Product Code symbol was removed, they said.
A manager at the store reported that the woman denied the accusations against her when confronted and left. When police were called, Officer Revill said he was in the area and stopped the woman's Ford Explorer as she left the parking lot.
She was booked into the Wood County jail and spent the night in "protective custody." She was released Friday after posting $1,500 of a $4,500 bond, police said.
Ms. Ali could not be reached for comment yesterday. She is to appear in Perrysburg Municipal Court at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.
