-- The United Auto Workers used its influence at a Toledo Jeep plant to ensure 17 machine skilled repairmen were laid off before other tradesmen. That's according to a lawsuit the idled workers filed this week in federal court in Toledo.
The lawsuit says U-A-W Local 12 discriminated against the machine repairmen in favor of millwrights and electricians.
The laid off workers say that resulted in the loss of pay and overtime, layoff benefits and the chance to be trained for other jobs. The laid off repairmen are seeking more than 33 (m) million dollars in damages.
Officials for U-A-W Local 12 and DaimlerChrysler, which owns the Toledo Jeep plant, could not be reached for comment today.
