GFI recalls 717,000 pounds of beef
Minnesota firm says frozen ground beef may be contaminated with E. coli.
August 23, 2002: 10:36 AM EDT
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - GFI American Inc. of Minneapolis recalled about 717,000 pounds of frozen ground beef that may be contaminated with the deadly bacteria E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Friday.
E. coli O157:H7 can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and kidney damage. Children and the elderly are most at risk.
GFI is recalling products that were produced June 25-29, July 1-3 and July 16, the USDA said. The beef was distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in the United States.
There have been no reports of illness, the USDA said. The bacteria is destroyed by cooking food to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Each recalled package has the establishment code "EST. 2368" inside the USDA seal of inspection.
