Honest Lawyer?

An investment counselor went out on her own. She was shrewd and diligent, so business kept coming in, and pretty soon she realized she needed an in-house counsel, so she began interviewing young lawyers.

"As I'm sure you can understand," she started off with one of the first applicants, "in a business like this, our personal integrity must be beyond question." She leaned forward. "Mr. Peterson, are you an *honest* lawyer?""Honest?" replied the job prospect. "Let me tell you something about honest. Why, I'm so honest that my father lent me fifteen thousand dollars for my education and I paid back every penny the minute I tried my very first case." "Impressive. And what sort of case was that?

"The lawyer squirming in his seat admitted, "He sued me for the money."

The gene pool needs chlorine.

There are such things. They are probably more common than is popularly believed. I have had business with several lawyers who maintained the highest standards of ethics.

It's the ambulance chasers that give the breed a bad name.

Sorry to disagree, but I know four good examples.

    Richard Dodson of Texarkana.

    Steven Watkins of Greenville.

Rhonda Cates and John Haring of Dallas.

I used to think all lawyers were crooked and sorry, until I needed one and had to find a good one. I have found these four attorneys to be very honest, conscientious, hard-working people.

There is another one, one that I once regarded as not so ethical, who taught me a lesson about defense attorneys, and gave me a new respect for the job they do. This was about 18 years ago.

I rolled up on his client, who was holding a .22 revolver in his hand, standing over a man he had just murdered. The victim had holes dead center in the upper sternum, and dead center in the forehead. He was what we call "graveyard dead."

First words out of the shooter's mouth when he saw me were, "I shot him."

Gentlemen, that is a res gestae statement, not in response to questioning, and is admissible in any court in the country. During booking, and after his Miranda warning was read, the idiot made several other incriminating statements, which I duly recorded in my report.

At trial, I was the only law enforcement witness called to testify. We got all the statements in, as well as my own damning observations.

The court-appointed lawyer Jerry Davis, was one who ALWAYS seemed to defend the scumbags. Because of that, I did not like Mr. Davis.

At the trial, I could tell going in that Davis knew his was a lost cause. But he DID HIS JOB. He made all the proper motions, knowing that the judge would deny them. He objected at the proper time, knowing that he would be overruled. He asked me all the right questions. He did his best to give the accused the representation to which he was entitled.

His man was found guilty and was sentenced to life without possibility of parole. I found out later that he died in prison.

I gained a new respect for Davis that day, and told him so. He still defends guilty people, but I count him among my friends, and I respect the job he does.

Who was it that said better a 1000 guilty go free than one innocent be punished. Lawyers are a necessary evil. Most are just normal people doing a dificult job, BUT some are bottom feeding scum who give all the rest a bad name.

The purpose of a public defender is to defend an indigent person's rights and do the best they can to see the defendant gets a fair trial. These are the same rights that we all share. It may involve representing people who are the scum of the earth, and who the lawyer finds personally despicable. It is one of the most difficult jobs a lawyer can do, and one of the most important. The pay is usually low, and their reward for defending our rights is often public contempt, ridicule and hatred.

Glad you figured it out Nunn.

As in any profession, you're going to find all degrees of honesty and morality.
I don't feel that it's fair to brand all lawyers as dishonest.
My youngest daughter is in her second year of law school, so my opinion of lawyers has naturally improved.

AND, she is a strong supporter of the 2nd Ammendment............
