NRA Blames Canada For September 11th Attacks; Gun Industry Watch
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The National Rifle Association (NRA) is unfairly blaming the Canadian government for the September 11th attacks on the United States, according to a new watchdog group, Gun Industry Watch. The NRA has produced a segment for their October 2 "NRA Live" web broadcast titled "Canada Targets Gun Control...Ignoring Real Threat of Terrorism," that includes an array of accusations that the Canadian government's enforcement of gun licensing and registration allowed terrorist cells to proliferate and "contributed" to the September 11th attacks on the U.S. "It's unfortunate that the NRA has chosen to use a national tragedy to promote its point of view and to launch a baseless attack against one of the United States' staunchest allies, Canada," says Nan Aron, president of Alliance for Justice, which sponsors Gun Industry Watch. "At a time when our government is trying to build an international coalition to fight terrorism, this is particularly troubling." The "NRA Live" segment features an interview with a Canadian Member of Parliament, Gary Breitkreuvs, who opposes gun licensing and registration. It includes an NRA "reporter" asking leading and accusatory questions to the parliamentarian and suggesting that the Canadian government's focus on new gun laws caused them to ignore a growing terrorist threat. Among the charges leveled at the Canadian government, the NRA contends: -- The Canadian government has created a "haven" for terrorists; -- The government "chose to look the other way" as terrorists proliferated; -- The Canadian government "neglected its promise of public safety" and "contributed" to the Sept. 11th attacks. Gun Industry Watch is asking the NRA to either prove these accusations or issue a formal apology to the Canadian government. "There's absolutely no evidence to support these ridiculous charges," said Aron. "It's time for the NRA to tone down the rhetoric and stop attacking our friends in order to promote its pro-gun agenda." http://politics.yahoo.com/politics/features/us_newswire/200110/1004-113.html
