Clouders thread about entertainers turned out to be a fine discussion about blues music!...but who do you not like, inspite of how popular they are?...I promise to stay away from the obvious, like The Osmonds,The Jacksons,.....etc..218[This message has been edited by 218Beekeep (edited 02-16-2002).]

OK...I`m gunna get contraversial now...What the hell is it that people see in Bruce Springstien..and who`s "BOSS"is he,anyway?..Oh yeah..I guess he was Max Wienberg`s "boss".I`m sorry, but "Born in the USA" is about the worst song ever written!!!Although Born to run and Streets of Philladelphia are very good ,this is one of the most overrated artists ever!!.218

218BeekeepMost people who don't think much of Bruce Springsteen only know of him for the "Born in the USA" album. He's got a lot of good stuff, and a lot of it came out years before he did that album. "Darkness On The Edge of Town" is a great album. Songs like "Thunder Road" are great. Check some of his earlier stuff out, and you may change your mind.By the way..he ain't my "boss" either!

I can take the heat, so here you go, my two all time favorites, I'll shoot the new stereo if you dont turn the station singers, Tom Petty and......Dillon. Theres a couple others, but they are the ones I remember right now. Never liked 'em never will. Cant sing, never could, wish they'd stop, and for a group I cant stand, The Beatles, always did suck, always will.

Ohhhhh, Rob! I smell trouble for that remark about the Beatles. I also like Tom Petty but that is my choice.I don't like opera, can't understand it! I don't like a lot of the newer country singers. I can't stand any of the teeny booper girl singers (most are just a show), boy bands, rap, real hard core stuff....

Yes, robsguns deserves some crap for the Beatles comment. But he also deserves some for the Dylan comment (not least of which is that he wasn't even close on the spelling). Tom Petty comments I'll forgive, though I do like him. Bob Dylan is considered by many to be one of, if not the most, influential rock musicians of all time. He changed rock by putting meaning behind the lyrics and taking it out of the teeny-bopper realm that it had been relegated to. Prior to Dylan, rock music lyrics were very light, and almost never touched upon serious subjects. The music might have been good, but the lyrics didn't get much beyond the "teenage crush" sort of songs (don't get me wrong--I love some of the old 50's and early 60's stuff). Dylan showed that rock could convey important messages relevant to the issues of the time and still be commercially viable. He completely changed rock music, and is truly one of the all-time greats because of the huge way that he influenced rock music. If you like rock music, you have to respect Dylan.Dylan doesn't have the best voice, but I find that the best musicians are the ones who can, and do, write their own material and have something serious to say about something besides their girlfriend (or boyfriend). Many of my favorites don't have the great voice (Steve Earle, Neil Young, Lucinda Williams) but I'll take them any day over singers (note I say singers, not musicians) with better voices. Good singers are a dime a dozen. What differentiates a Bob Dylan from all the crap out there is that he has a real creative talent. Great music with meaningful lyrics make for a great song. Good music is thought provoking, not just ear candy. A musician who can do both has a real gift. Tons of idiots can sing (Britanny Spears and the like). The Beatles are the same. Their early music was pretty light-hearted--enjoyable tunes, but not very heavy stuff. As they progressed, they got better and better.

Don't like rap, don't like much of the new country, because it ain't country, it's pop with a southern accent. HATED both Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Yes. Pretentious technicians, nothing more. Playing music has a lot more to do with it than playing notes. Plus Jon Anderson (Yes) has the weakest voice around. Heard them live, and I left, he faked his way through every song I heard (about 3and a half). Left a Pink Floyd concert after a few songs, too, I was falling asleep from the monotonous drone of the looped sequencers, and getting sick from smelling the pot. Went to a club and watched some local boys rock out instead. Sure wish I had their money, though!!!!

Hate Rod Stewart (irritating voice), Melissa Ethridge (very little voice, not a great song writer), and many of those gunluv listed above. Being a red-blooded male, I'll watch Madonna and she has done some sexy tunes, like "Vogue." Hate harmonica blues, much of rap, most opera, most country (except some of the women stars). Hate that whole acoustic folk song "*-ba-ya" scene with a passion, and that's kinda why I hate Credence Clearwater -- too twangy and hillbilly, not enough rock 'n roll. Hate the soft rock period that produced a lot of the 70s junk: Cisco Kid, Jesus is Just All Right with Me, Daniel is Leaving Tonight on a Plane, drone, drone. As a musician myself, I like a variety of music, including some jazz (like Weather Report, Return to Forever, Diana Krall) and truly talented artists like Joni Mitchell. Stevie Ray was good but Hendrix was better. Watching the boy bands is like watching cartoons at my age, though I like girls enough to enjoy some of the girl pop stars' dance moves. I like funk and R&B, even enjoyed the Ken Burns jazz documentary. I'll buy a Sting album but don't like all of his stuff. I still like classic Earth, Wind and Fire for their sheer talent, but the family bands leave me cold. Hated Mac Davis and what's his name Campbell pretty bad. Tony Orlando. Don't care for Ricky Martin, and don't like his songs. I will watch Britney cause I'm that much of a dirty old man; the skinnier blonde singer has a better voice, but she's not as much fun to look at, although the music video of Moulin Rouge is a kick. I like U2 and any band with that kind of quality staying power from "Mysterious Ways" to "Elevation." (Yes, I liked watching Angelina Jolie in TOMB RAIDER, but that's another topic). I kinda like Macy Gray, used to like the Beach Boys when they were still together, and respect the prodigious product of Quincy Jones. I don't enjoy Dylan, but like Bonnie Raitt, hate that activist woman who thinks she sounds good singing a capella who's name I have apparently suppressed, used to hate Tom Petty although some of his songs like You Wreck Me are pretty good after all. Never was into Rush. Dream Theater strikes me as technique in search of real music. [This message has been edited by offeror (edited 02-17-2002).]

Anything that is remotely connected to "RAP" and also the newer "SOUL" artists... they should have left those with the original singers, since they sound better anyway.-smooth

By the way, Barry Manilow's greatest moment was probably when he appeared on some variety show and sang a medley of the songs he had written for commercials, including the MacDonald's "You Deserve a Break Today..." He shoulda stayed in advertising. Oh, and that reminds me, I hate that Donovan guy too. And Jose Feliciano. But I like some of Jackson Browne, and I really like James Taylor. And now I have a whole new take on Steely Dan -- like 'em for their jazzy fusion. I guess they were a little ahead of their time. Can't watch that chest-beating Celine Dion any more. I like Cheryl Crowe and Gloria Estefan pretty much, and can't make up my mind about Mariah, but I wouldn't kick her out for eating crackers, if you catch my drift.

1)Rap that doesnt involve Rock2)Country that doesnt involve Rock3)Oldies. Period. For example:Ol Dirty *=rap=badLinkin Park=rap/metal=goodConway Twitty=country=badLynyrd Skynyrd=southern rock=goodI dont think I need to elaborate on the oldies thing. Fact of the matter is that the same people that insult "modern" music for it's over-simplicity like oldies music that is twice as simplistic with half as many instruments.

When Kurt Cobain shot himself he took good music with him. IMHO, there hasn't been a good bank since then with the exception of David Bowie, but he was around before. You know what I mean. Why is everyone anti-Jackson?Me, I think Jackson has to be one of the single most talented singers/dancers in history. Speaking of talent, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Elton John. He's been writing music before I was born and almost anything he writes goes gold. I wonder how many people here who dislike rap have actually listened to any? And no, catching the occasional bass thump or two from Dr. Dre doesn't count. Not all rap is bad poetry to a low bass line. It takes talent to rap, and anyone who doesn't think so, has never given rap a chance. Speaking of rap, how many of you guys listen to Bloodhound Gang, Insane Clown Posse or Cake (Yes, I classify `Cake' as a form of rap)?Munkey
