Michigan Will Reportedly Buy Back GunsAttorney General Jennifer Granholm said Wednesday that the state is prepared to unveil a gun buy-back program. Granholm is scheduled to announce details of the program Thursday before the media at Motor City Blight Busters in Detroit.Law enforcement agencies, inlcuding the Michigan Sheriff's Association and Detroit Police Department, and Meijer Stores are supporting Granholm's office in the program, known as Project Safety.During the buy-back programs, officials offer to pay gun owners for firearms they turn into law enforcement officers. Gun owners are granted limited immunity for turning in the guns, including illegal weapons. The programs are aimed at encouraging people to get illegal firearms out of neighborhoods and from homes where a potential tragedy could occur. http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/wdiv/20011219/lo/1012575_1.html

Only governments can come up with ways to help the criminals and not see the forest for the trees! They will pay money to criminals for junk so the criminals can now purchase better guns (or drugs) to use against good citizens and drive the costs of running the state up and up! Buy Back?- Did they sell these guns to the criminals in the 1st place? These are the smart people running this country? We are the dummies falling for it? I think not!

But Daddo, it's going to get guns out of the hands of criminals. And besides it's for the children.

There was a "buy back" (I hate that term) program in DC some years ago. One TV station covered it and had pictures of a lot of the guns. About 98% were junk that probably didn't work and weren't worth $50. There were, however, some real treasures. I saw 1st and 2nd generation SAA's, 3 or 4 old Winchester lever actions, a couple of 1911's that looked like WWII issue. Anybody have any doubts as to whether these are now in some cop's private collection? I wrote a "letter to the editor" in the Washington Times urging people to get an appraisal on the guns they inherited or didn't know anything about and that if they felt like they were doing something worthwhile to get rid of the gun, at least sell it to someone who would give them a fair price for it. In my letter I also made reference to the collector quality guns being in some cops personal collection. A few days later there was a reply from the DC police that ALL the guns that had been collected, were destroyed.Yeah! Right!I'm sure the DC cops would have loved to pay me a visit but I lived in VA at the time.Mudge the skeptic

I'm with you Mudge. Without going into too much detail, my father recently got into a minor scrape with the law. They took every firearm out of his collection to "hold" for him until the issue was settled. Well, Dad was proven innocent on all charges and went down to the Sheriff's Office to pick up his gear. The box containing his collection was missing several valuable pieces, including his coveted Gold Cup that he's had forever and a day. Luckily, we've got family in the local PD, so he was able to get his gear back after my cousin, the Chief, made some discreet and not so discreet inquiries with the Deputies. Dad's gun was mysteriously returned 2 days later. I admire police officers in general, but there are enough bad apples out there to completely ruin the rep of the good guys.

At one time, it was my unpleasant duty to see to the destruction of firearms that had come into the custody of my PD, and were ordered destroyed by the Court.I can't speak for all cops everywhere, but in my case, the destruction had to be documented and witnessed. I would toss the guns into the trunk of my patrol car and take them to the city garage. There, with me and the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor watching, one of the mechanics would fire up a cutting torch, and one by one, cut the guns in two or more pieces, with at least one cut through the receiver. The list of destroyed weapons was then turned back in to the Property Officer for review and filing. We cut up everything. Winchesters, Remingtons, Colts, Brownings, Rugers. Even cheap stuff like Ravens. Some days it made my heart sick to see such destruction. The pieces were allowed to cool, and then thrown in the dumpster.Even if one were inclined to make an unauthorized appropriation, I don't know anyone stupid enough to risk losing his career and going to prison for a gun worth maybe $500.

Travelor.....That reminds me. At the "buy back" I mentioned, there were some FFL holders working the line making offers on interesting pieces. The cops were quick to run them off after they made a few deals though.Mudge the forgetful

A few years back, we had a program like that here. Contacted the local NRA rep (A buddy and I had this idea). We wanted to offer 5 bucks more than the police, and needed financial support to make our point. Fendry didn't go for it, thought it would make the NRA look bad. Oh, well, we tried......
