April 16th to the 19th. Taking Donna to go horse back riding at some Horse and Bison ranch there. Never been to that part of the state and thought it would be a nice weekend. They also have a wine and food festival in Boone. Is there anything else to do or a must see in or near Ashville??? Oakie

Wheels thru time motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley
Corner Kitchen is one of our favorite restaurants. Located just outside the Biltmore estate in the Biltmore village.
If you get to Weaverville the Glass Onion has some of the most awesome food.
If you dig waterfalls the Transylvania county section has a zillion of them.
Hendersonville has two winery's worth a tasting. Of course if you gamble Cherokee is there, I was not impressed though.
Maggie valley area is big with bikers and has some really nice cabin/motels. As already pointed out the World of Wheels is there.
If you can swing it take a ride on the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad at Bryson City.
One of the highest elevations in the East is Mount Mitchell. Blowing rock is worth going to as well as Grandfather mountain with the swinging bridge, Sliding rock, looking glass, Etc.
You can't do it all in a week so just go and have fun but if you make some plans you can do more than spontaneous. Mountain roads take a lot longer to get somewhere than the map miles would indicate
If you take the bike you can do the Tail of the Dragon or Diamond Back through little Switzerland that is awesome too.
Really amazing!
Boone is a bit of a long haul from Asheville. Biltmore is a whole day for sure.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!![:)][:)][:)][:)][:)] That's a lot of info and all in needed to get started and finish. The tail of the dragon is on the schedule for later in the year with the motorcycle club, but I don't know if i am experienced enough to do it on the goldwing[;)] Wheels through time will be on the schedule for this trip as is Biltmore. Waterfalls is a must also, as we love hiking the falls where ever we go.
Captn. we are camping at the Homewood suites this weekend. [;)][^][:X][:D] They have a nice fireplace, free breakfast and an indoor swimming pool. We do love camping and are planning on a few tent trips this year. This is the Mrs. 50th birthday on the 16th, so I think she would enjoy the pampering that weekend. We are doing a turn around vacation and heading to Key West right afterwards for our son's 21st birthday which is the 20th of April.
I get hammered every year in and around April-May. Wife's and son's birthday are four days apart and then I get mother's day and Easter. [B)] I feel like I am going to the poor house after those two weeks. Oakie

Buddy, you ought to open a travel agency[:)] Really, thank you very much, you just planned my whole trip for me. Oakie
Allen Griggs lives up in that area, he knows it better than I do.
The wife and I have spent a lot of time traveling about up there. If we ever moved it would be to go live in the mountains of western NC.
I didn't mention it but Lake Lure and Chimney rock are also pretty cool to see.

MrsFun will be 50 this year as well and I am not far behind her. We did a lot of tent camping before kids then got a camper when they were very small. These days it is mostly "Condo Camping" I have gotten to do a few nice motorhome trips, so once the kids are through college here in a few years I can do some more exploring!
We will be down in Gulf Shores early June for a week. Should be fun!
You will see the signs for "Craggy Gardens". Its just a few mile from Ashville proper.
It been a long time, but I think you travel through the tunnel to the northern side of the hill and hike up. I might be wrong. But at any rate, hike up.
An awesome stand of mountain laurel leading to a bald, lichen covered mountain top. No real climbing involved. Not really much of a hike. But an awesome walk to the top of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.
If its sunny and hot, take the walk. If its overcast and/or raining, take the walk. Even more impressive if the clouds are whispering past you on top of the world.
On the Blue Ridge Parkway, travel north.

Craggy Gardens is a really nice hike. As I recall there is a nice shelter at the far end and I'm pretty sure that with a good set of binocs, you can see that shelter from the observation point at the top of Mt Mitchell.
Had a friend that was a Park Ranger up there. Very lonely place in the Winter.
I left downtown Asheville one morning at about 5AM in an unmarked cruiser. Going down Black Mountain a * Mercedes passed me. I got up to 100 mph and could barely see his tail lights. I backed off and said God bless you man if you can make it down this mountain I salute you. Kept looking for him in the runaway bunkers but never caught sight of him again. Didn't see any more vehicles for miles either direction. Just useless rambling this post brought to memory of the area. Love it up there. Got a nephew in Swannanoa.[8D]
Oh yeah. Fontana Dam, highest dam East of the Rocky Mts.
go see grove park inn.
