The 08 family

7mm-08 Rem
.308 Win
358 Win

The Mauser family

6mm Rem
.257 Roberts

The above are the families I am familiar with. Am I leaving out anything? Anyone know of other cartridge families? H&H and Weatherby also have families. Any help will be appreciated.

Boomer, actually you can think of every cartridge in your "families" as descendants of the same cartridge - the Mauser. Not to mention the 6.5x57, 9x57, .45 ACP, .44 Auto Mag, etc.

    Then there's the .32-40 family:
    .219 Zipper
    .25-35 WCF
    .25-36 Marlin
    .30-30
    .32 Win Spl
    .38-55

    The .45-70 family:
    .33 Win
    .38-56
    .40-82
    .45-70
    .45-90
    . . . and a bunch more!

In all seriousness, with four shell holders, you can reload about half the calibers ever made, at least in this country.

    How about the H & H family.

Beyond the .375 and .300 there were other calibers in the line.

Also, I believe the Weatherby family was descended from the original H & H belted cases, blown out and with radiused shoulders.

aglore - I would consider the Gibbs and Howell lines proprietary and I was trying to stay away from all of the wildcat and proprietary families. Hey didn't the Gibbs family also invent Disco?

aglore - I did not know about the 9.3x57mm. Who makes this one, I have never seen one? What is its recommended use range? What is that a .36 caliber?

218Beekeep - If the Bee came first, then it would bee the Bee family.

Tazmutt - I forgot about the Savage family, good one.

He Dog - Not sure, but I think the 338-08 may be a wildcat.

Iconoclast - I never even consider the 32-40 and 45-70 families.

BoltactionMan - The H&H and Weatherby families are good to know about. I am not familiar with these at all.

Boomerang, you can buy a Howell cartridge reamer from Clymer as Ken Howell did not keep these as propritary cartridges. You can also buy Howell stamped brass from American Hunting Rifles in Hamilton MT.

The 9.3X57 came about in 1900 or maybe a couple of years earlier. It will launch a 232 to 250 grain bullet in the 2250 to 2350 FPS range, maybe 2400 with the 232 grainer. Is about equal to the 358 Winchester in power and use. Yes it is .366 caliber.
