What would be the effective range (Texas Hill Country Deer) of a 9mm rifle with off the shelf ammo.
Thanks

50 feet on the outside! 9 MM is WAY to small/weak for deer (even puny little Texas deer).
While I am sure that a 9MM could kill a deer, I doubt if most could place one accurately enough to assure a clean, quick kill. Yeah, I've heard of (and seen) deer killed with a .22, it still isn't an ethical choice to use a caliber where there is a HIGH probability that the animal will not be killed clean and will run and possibly be lost.

Shootist- I always heard that Texas had big deer, but recently I have seen a lot of people say that Texas got some tiny deer. Have I been misinformed? Are they small or big? Maybe I heard they have big racks. Oh I dont know..

texas deer in general are small 150 pounds or so , but in alot of areas the racks definitly make up for the lack of venison do not swhoot at a deer with a 9mm itis just not smart.

Shootist...Great response, X-Ring!!! Stand by for all the Texans to gang up on you and start describing their 475 pound heavily muscled deer....everything is supposed to be bigger in Texas isn't it? Actually though aren't the smallest deer found in Arizona? I think they are called Cowes deer and weigh in around 65 pounds. Any Zonies out there to confirm that approximate weight? Beach

I was thinking the smallest deer were "key deer" found down in the Florida Keys.

Actually,Texas has some of the bigger deer found in the states...some huge ranches down there started thinning out the junk deer that are native...breeding some big deer.
    I saw 100's of deer at a time,around San Angelo...a little bigger then a Kansas jackrabbit....maybe 90 pounds. They looked starved to death,to me.They have over-populated,over-grazed their range,in a lot of areas.

Beach, Coues deer and Pacific Blacktail are very small (I'm not sure but what they aren't the same species (sub-species?). Texas hill country deer are pretty small also, a good sized one will run 125 to 150 on the hoof, they don't compare to those corn-fed Missouri monsters up your way.

There was a little deer in SE Asia, about the size of a smallish hound (or a large gerbil ) that is (I think) the smallest deer in the world. Memory says it is called a 'barking' deer for the sound it makes. There is also a deer called a 'mouse' deer in that same part of the world - don't know which is smaller. (Guess I could look it up if it mattered )
