Just received may October issue of GUNS magazine. They feature the new Springfield Armory's M1. Man, is that the best looking rifle ever!?

The first one I have purchased, although my father has given me one I have not picked up yet.

SHould I have this thing checked by a gunsmith before I shoot it? I have zero experience with a Garand, never even so much as held one before I picked this one up. Any info is appreciated

Okay. I confess. I know very little about this piece of Americana. Too busy shotting bolts and levers and a Browning BAR Semi 30-06 left a bad taste in my mouth as a kid (another story) as it nothing to improve my shooting.

But I am getting intrigued with the idea of owning a Garand. So this is the question. Why are some 30-06 and some 308? Enlighten me oh wise ones.

Yeah, I too would like to know about the complaints. I have been using my Garand for the last 50 some odd tears and dearly love it.

WWIIVET....the knock is not on the original Garands but rather on the new ones currently being manufactued by Springfield Armory Company. If I were looking for an M1 to shoot, I'd send my $500 and a letter to to CMP asking for a shooter with a TE of 2 or less. The CMP people are really good about getting someone a rifle with which they will be happy. Also for WWII vets if you send a copy of your DD214 they have tended(no guarantees) to supply a rifle as close as possible to what you used during the war. Plus you just can't beat the price. Beach

tfc....Have heard that clearances and fit are not as tight or close as the original Springfield Armory M1's. Also understand that op rod slips off the bolt far more easily and frequently than original M1's. Loose clearances usually make for a more reliable weapon but a far less accurate weapon. Op rod slipping off bolt cancels out that reliability big time!! Beach

Whats the scoop on the newly manufactured Israel Arms International(IAI) M-333 if anyone knows?I have a M1A but I feel Im the only person around here who doesnt own a Garand,I might need to remedy that.I have seen good quality with most Isralei firearms so dont expect any less of these but I do say most. They say they are classic remanufactured with new receiver and refinished G.I. stock the price seems a bit steep to me at (msrp) $852.00 is this near going rate for other Garands? The IAI look pretty good though so curious to quality and maybe cheaper alternatives to that $852.00 and would like one with a little history behind it.
