"March Madness" 2003 may seem like a long way off, but it already marks a major victory for animals who won't be losing their hides over
it-literally. In response to a letter from PETA dated November 16, 2001, the directors of the Division I men's and women's basketball
committees of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) voted unanimously to permanently bench leather balls at their annual
championship tournament in favor of better-performing, cruelty-free synthetic basketballs, already in use by many major universities and
conferences. As a thank-you, PETA sent the NCAA a package of vegan chocolate basketballs along with a note saying, "Thanks for
moo-ving away from leather! It's awesome, baby!"

PETA sent the NCAA information on the horrors of the leather industry, including the fact that it takes an entire cow to make just four
basketballs. Much of the leather used in the U.S. is produced overseas, where cows are marched to slaughter to the point of collapse,
crowded onto transport trucks where they frequently break bones or suffocate, and often dismembered and skinned while still alive.
Leather tanning is also tremendously destructive to the environment, consuming vast quantities of often scarce water and employing
scores of dangerous chemicals. Tannery workers and people who live in proximity to tanneries are stricken with life-threatening diseases
at many times national averages.
"It looks like leather basketballs have fouled out," says PETA's Sports Campaign coordinator Dan Shannon. "From now on, the NCAA can
be known as the National Compassionate Athletic Association."

PETA has turned its attention to the NBA in the hope that the league will follow the lead of the Women's National Basketball Association
and also disqualify leather and start shooting with pleather.

NCAA's letter to PETA announcing the switch to composite basketballs follows. For more information, please visit CowsAreCool.com.

I think this is just wonderfull!!!! Now that there is all that excess leather that is not being used in basketballs, maybe the price of holsters will come down!!!!!
