I think I helped a theft victim

I do a lot of GB transfers here in OH at X number of dollars, so a customer calls today and asks if I will do a transfer Back from a Sherrif"s Dept in CO that recovered his stolen gun!

I said yes, even though I do not think the Dept has to do this; I don't care; It might be their policy.

So, I decided to charge 1/2 X for the transfer back to the owner.
I don't have anything to do with the shipping $$ , so does this sound fair to you other dealers?

A lot of dealers wouldn't have even done the 50% off.

Federal law says firearms shipped across state lines must go to an FFL, it doesn't matter that it's a Sheriff's office doing the shipping.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

So, I should charge him nothing ?
    Or My Full X?
I'm just asking if anyone thinks this seems fair?

I think it would depend on his attitude or if he ISA good customer. Wouldn't hurt to help a guy out. You are only out a few minutes of your time.

I'm not a dealer, but here's my take...

Depends on what X is. One dealer charges me $15 per and another I have to make take my money. These are extremely fair amounts and I wouldn't mind paying full $$ to them for this service.

If your X is more than $25 then half price would be a good gesture.

I really dont know what the law is on the matter, but we have just shipped the firearms to the local law enforcement agency and had them sign the gun over to the owners following the chain of custody. We eat the shipping costs, last one I was personally involved with was a Luger stolen in 1979 in Seattle, the owner had passed but the heirs were still around, so we shipped it to the SO there and they in turn signed the property back to the victim.

Not true, Firearms can be shipped across state lines to a police agency legally per federal law

The Federal law is US Code Title 18, section 922. It does not require that a firearm being shipped across a state line go to a FFL. It requires that when the OWNERSHIP is being transferred (other than in named special circumstances) that it go to a FFL. In this case, there is no transfer of ownership. It was his, it is still his. If I ship a rifle to Remington for repair, they return it directly to me. No transfer of ownership.

+1.......not that you should work for free but by throwing this guy a bone at this time would be great PR for you. I'm sure every step of the process for this guy has been a pain in the neck. It is an opportunity for you to be the smoothest coolest part of the process. Maybe he would be interested in buying a gun safe from you. Sounds like he needs one.[:D]

You should charge him only what it cost you whatever that might be. I suspect the actual costs is pennies for the paper and ink?

Let me go further, the Government knew what it was doing when it set this system up. The Government knew it would get complience when it gave power to the dealers to make money while collecting the tolls on gun commerce.

All dealers should not charge anything above what their actual costs are. Want to make a living selling gun? Sell your guns. Charging for paper pushing just makes you a government stooge.

If you want to start taking away the power of the enity that will some day take away your business, start thinking and playing smart.

good point. Ownership hasn't changed....should be able to ship it right back to the guy like it was coming back from a factory warranty repair.

    Charge him 24?.

It's a magic number. You'd be surprised what will happen with 24?.

    The returns are amazing!

Whatever you charge and he agrees to is "fair". If he is a customer you have done transfers for, and especially if you made the transfer on this gun, I would give him a freebee. Otherwise 50% is a generous discount.
