Do these kits that are on sale really work. They say it can help you get your FFL. Has anyone ever used one? Do they work? Is it a pile of paper I could download of the net my self?

If you will blame gun makers for every shooting then blame car maker for every car accident.

Why pay for what is free.
You can get everything you need from ATF.
    Check here http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/nlc/index.htm
Better check you local and state laws before you apply they can be more stringent the the fed's

Guys are charging for the simple convenience of giving the novice everything they need, including a simple "bound book" to record their stock and disposition. It's not a scam, but it's true you can do it yourself for free. Your bigger problem is, can I learn to operate within the law, and do my state and local laws allow me to run a gun business on my property? You're supposed to have (per the BATF) regularly posted business hours, your license posted in plain sight, and probably your property has to be zoned commercial. If you're renting, your landlord might not be crazy about a gun store on his property. Then if you use an FFL these days, count on the BATF notifying your state so that you will be receiving mail about things like state sales tax (on sold items) and use tax (on the guns you keep for your personal use).

Unless you're going to try to make a living with it, it's not (IMHO) worth the hassle. The few $$$ you might save by having one are nothing compared to the red tape, fees, licenses, etc. that you'll have to get to have one. I gave mine up when all this crap started some years back.
This subject has been discussed a few times on the board and the consensus seems to be....IT AIN'T WORTH IT !!!

Thanks guys. I was thinking that if I could get one I could just have all my guns shipped to me.

Go for it!!! Get that FFL!!! Then after you buy all the cheap guns you want, buy an appliance store so you can get your refrigerator, stove and dishwasher at cost. Why pay those high prices for used cars, when you can open your own dealership? Later on, you can go to med school so you can show those overpriced doctors a thing or two.

Don't think ATF issues a FFL for personal use, you will have to
set it up as a business to pass with them. Then you will have
to get a state and/or city business license to operate. Then you
will need a State sales tax number, so you can send the
paperwork and sales tax to the state/county/city each month. If
no sales you still have to send the forms with zeroes in the blocks.
At least you do in Alabama. With the cost of all the licenses each
year, time for paperwork, keeping the bound book, etc. you will need
to decide if it is worth it or not. By the way, on the FFL kits
don't waste your money. You can call BATF and get the forms, books,
etc. Except for a bound book, and the one I used came from
    Brownell's.

Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.

    ccasey,,
Several of my neighbors here in rural NE Pa have had thier FFLs since I was young and they finally gave them up a couple years back because it just wasn't worth the "new" hassles imposed. Unless you do a day-to-day business you wont save a dime.Do you plan to buy several guns a month? Just a thought. I wanted one too, once, I fix locks for a living, three to four hundred dollar ones, I thought I could use an FFL to buy gun parts cheap, fix guns too! make extra $$.Too much trouble though.

If your into older guns 50 years old + consider just getting a C&R.
Not much hassel of record keeping. But bear in mind it's for your own use as a collector not to buy and sell for profit.

I have run across sellers who think they have to have a FFL 01 because they don't understand C&R. You will see guns here on the auction that are C&R eligible but they are asking for a FFL 01 or don't list it as C&R and when you e mail them they say no to the C&R.

No offense intended. Every so often a guy will wander in, look at every gun in the place, one at a time, then ask, "Do you have any FFL
forms? I'm going to get my license so I can buy MY guns cheap."
