Winchester 101- what should I do?

This week I purchased a 99% plus, Winchester 101 pigeon grade 20 ga. from a local private individual after the advice I got from posting on " ask the experts ". I love the gun and it is beautiful to look at and hold. This is probably the finest shotgun I own and plan to carry it to my grave ( which will be sooner than later if the family CFO finds out about it ). I would really like to take it out on those special occasions, just to hear the ooh"s and ahh"s. You guys know what I mean. The problem I am having is that I only shoot upland birds when I plan on wing shooting, and the gun was not made with changeable chokes and it is full over modified. So, do I keep it as original for the collectability or do I take it Briley's, which is not far down the road, and have them ream it out modified over improved cyl.,or put flush screw in chokes? Also, your opinions on the gun itself would be much appreciated.

cpermd, having it reamed is kind of what I would really like to do, but the barrels are marked from the factory as to what the chokes should be. I don't think Briley's can change that. As far as the retirement/investment thing, it worked for the first few years with the CFO, but as she now reminds me " it is only an investment if you ever plan to sell it ". After 12 years of marriage she is starting to wise up on this gun thing.

Do like I did and get an extra set of barrels with the chokes you want. It is like having two guns in one.

AMEN TO WHAT MS. CREANT SAID!!! DONT MESS UP THE BARRELS THAT COME WITH THE PIECE!!! YOU CAN HAVE TWO PIECES FOR THE PRICE OF 11/2. WHATS WRONG WITH THE CHOKES ON WHAT YOU HAVE? WILL MAKE YOU A BETTER SHOT IF YOU HAVE TO PUT IT RIGHT ON THEM. CARL

If the only thing you plan to shoot is upland birds , and you are not worried about "collector" value, I say ream it mod. over imp. cyl. It's your gun and if you plan to shoot it and not worry about second genereation, why do you care?

I know what I'd like to tell you, but that would make me a hypocrite. I always say keep guns original, but... I have a Ruger .338 and I had it magnaported, its great to shoot now. I guess the bottom line is, if my gun were ever to become collectable I would have ruined the value, but that never even crossed my mind, cause its been made better by that mod. and everyone who shoots it likes it that way. So, my usual advice on leaving yours original has made me rethink, and I say, make it as nice for you as you'd like, you will only live once, and so what if its dropped a few dollars in collector circles, any shooter in your family will thank you for doing it when you are no longer around.

I had the same experience with a fancy CD. Leave it alone and learn to shoot your quail and phesants with a full choke. Just wait a few heartbeats longer and let the pattern spread.A new set of barrels with matchng engraving will be expensive.Clouder..
