Why are you selling

Is it just me? Or do a lot of other people get tired of answering e-mails that ask "Why are you selling this gun?" Why in the hell do people normally sell guns? If you are a dealer that is why you have a license, to buy, sell, trade guns, right? If you are not a dealer, you are probably selling to get money for another gun. Who gives a rat's rump why you are selling a gun?

SOOPERSHOT, you got the first part right. Tell em you don't want to get caught with stolen property, that's why the price is so cheap. Some people can't resist that kind of deal.

I've been guilty of asking that question a few times. It was because it was such a good deal. I'm giving the seller a chance to inform me of any problems or issues with the item. It would really suck to pay a few hundred dollars for what you thought was a working gun, only to find out the barrel is plugged...Munkey

Haven't asked that one, but have asked "What exactly do you mean by 'customized barrel'?" Sometimes the descriptions leave a lot to be desired. I do admit to wondering a few times, when someone is selling a rifle I have been looking for for a year or more, how they could let it go. Anyone got an H & R 300 Ultra in .270, 95% or better they wanna sell?

I'm with Monkey. There is nothing wrong with asking that question. It sometimes lets you know if the person selling the gun knows the history of the gun or not, and that is very important. However, I do ask a lot more question than just that one.Boomer

I always ask that question. The answer may tell me a lot about the gun, and the seller. The history of the old guns I buy is of great interest to me. I recall buying a High Standard HD Military with original box and papers (and an unused, boxed extra magazine) from the original owner, who had had it since buying it new in 1948 after finally accumulating enough money after returning from WW II. He said he was dying and was trying to get his affairs in order for his family, none of whom wanted the pistol. He told me how much he had enjoyed the old pistol, and how many treed racoons he had killed with it while hunting with his * dogs. Although I did not know the man personally, I felt sorry for him, and I hold that pistol in high regard in his memory. If someone asks the question, there is nothing wrong with saying that the gun was bought at a gun show or the like for resale. There is no need to be offensive in the reply. When acquiring guns for resale, why not find out what you can by asking the same question of the seller? You might find out something of interest to yourself or the next owner.
