Shotgun News website seems to be down. Where else do you go for finding dates/times/locations of gun shows in your area?

Just got back from one in Chattanooga at the Shriner's Club. I saw ammo at about twice the price it is right now at Walmart and guns about 25% higher then they go all day long at gunbroker. I was at one guy's table while he was selling some poor guy a lcp for 400. The table next to him had one marked for $350. My question is why would anyone pay over 300 right now? Why do people just go there and try to rip people off? Why not actually price a gun for what its worth and then sell many guns instead of bringing your same over priced crap to every show and get maybe one sucker to buy from you?
I think that's my last gun show for awhile.

I am a collector and generally buy my guns near where I live but have been going to shows near the border of other states. Is is legal for me to buy a gun from a person who is not a FFL from another state? Or sell a gun to somebody who is not a FFL from another state. Seems to me there is about as many non dealers as there are dealers with tables these days

I took my granddaughter to a gun show here in Savannah today after church.I've never seen so much crap in my life.First they charged me $8.00 admission for an eight year old, then when we got inside it was vendors selling magnetic bracelets, toys, pocket books, and guns that looked like they had been used to paddle a boat.Is this normal at gun shows now or is this just an example of a promoter who will rent tables to anybody? If this has become the norm i'll be doing more business on GB or out of shotgun news.

I sold at gun shows starting in 1992 and did GREAT until 1995 when it kinda ended. It picked back up in 2000 but that was a short perk. I completely quit in 2003 frustrated. I really enjoy the business and would love to start up again but I do not want to waste the time and money setting up for a loser show again. How are shows doing now? Are they profitable again?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    O.K. , Welcome aboard ....
As you may very well know , the money game @ shows really depends on a bunch of variables ...
    such as :
    season (time of year).
    weather .
    location .
    size of show .
    attendance . (# of incoming).
    local laws .
    and ,
    Your Attitude ?
Your Selection of Items for sale ?
    Prices of your Items ?
Profit Margin on Your Items ?
    Ability to accept trades ?
    ect.ect.ect.
So , in other words , YES gun shows can be a good thing (or not) ???
A lot of this is up to YOU !!!!!!!!!
    Thanks !!!

I've worked gun/knife shows, and only knife shows. abc pretty much
nailed it. I'm not a people person, and find online sales to work
    better for me.

if your going to try and sell dime a dozen common items at full retail price, stay at home. i have a local dealer for that. if however, you have rare or at least less than common items, or even common items at really good prices, give it a go. just dont waste my time with a common market gun shop packed up and taken for a ride.

The last three that I have attended have been quite a bit less than satisfactory. They had fewer tables, limited selection, average prices, and were poorly attended as a result. If they do not improve, I would guess the main one in my area will die in a few years. There was no reason to go there over and above Gander Mountain or a good gun shop.

I would say Kev nailed it. If you have some really nice 99 Savages, I will come look and pay a fair price. If you have the usual supplies or Ruger rifles at retail prices, I will support the local shop that is there every day. I am interested in bargains, and uncommon, high quality stuff the local guy does not have.

One more guy with overpriced beaters will not get my attention.

    That depends....

Are you the kind of seller that insists your stuff is gold but the person on the other side of the table has nothing but pot metal?...
Do you call the women babe, and think she has no business at a show let alone talking to you about buying a gun?...
If you are the kind of seller that treats others with respect, and will give an a fair price for someone who is selling, not overprice your "pot metal", talk to women as you would anyone else who knows guns, then yes they would be profitable....[}:)]

Over the last ten or so years there has been a steady decline in the amount of vendors selling used guns, ammunition/reloading supplies, parts, etc. Seems to be lots of beanie babies, cheap jewelery, low end knives, candy, etc. Used to spend the good part of the day at a show. Now if I go to one I'm out of there in an hour or less, usually without making a purchase. Don't know how the vendors turn a profit.

Nothing worse than paying admission price for a gun show, then when you get inside there spread before you is a giant Flea Market. The flea market doesn't charge to park or admission to get in. I did not buy beanie babies when they were in style, I certainly do not want them now.

Actually, I have a few beanie babies. I have a goose and a duck. I also have a cocker spaniel (for my last dog) and a springer spaniel (for my current dog).

However, your point is a good one. I don't really go to gun shows anymore. I'll hit maybe one a year on a good year. I'm tired of paying $6.00 to get in the door only to be innundated with beef/elk jerky dealers, t-shirt dealers and the like.

The deals that I see at the gun shows aren't spectacular. I can usually find SOMETHING to pick up, like a magazine for one of my guns, but the prices on firearms honestly sucks -- to the point where if I shop around at every table at the gun show, and drive to Gander Mountain, I can get a better deal at Gander Mountain, and I don't have to pay an admission fee.

    Michael,
    Welcome to the forum.

I' m afraid gun shows are a dying breed. Here in Colorado, they made a law that with EVERY gun sold at a show, the buyer MUST go through the BRADY check. (It's still legal in this state, to do a face to face gun sale, with NO check, as long as it's NOT at a gun show [V])

Most of my dealing in shows were with the individual seller. The guy next door that didn't have an FFL, just wanted to try something new, and was willing to wheel and deal and trade.

The new law ran off most of these guys, they didn't even HAVE a number to call, for a background check. By the time the gun show management installed a "workable" system for independent sellers to call in, most of them had already given up. Add to that the fact that, if the seller is not an FFL, HE has to go through a check to TRADE with you, and I can see why they gave up.

USED to be, people carried in something to either sell or trade, and were usually successful. Now days, you see more and more people carrying the same items back out the door. I can't say for a fact, whether it's the owner that wants too much for his gun, or the dealer that isn't willing to give even a part of what it's worth. From personal experience, I do have my suspicions on which one of these is more of the truth. A little of both maybe?

Now were left with (mostly) only dealers, that overprice their firearms, are not willing to trade even close to "equal value." Who are marking their guns up from the shop price, to cover the cost of setting up a table.

Where it USED to be the rooms were filled to capacity with GUN venders, now we have an assortment of items to choose from. Probably taking up about half of the tables now. NONE of them dealing with guns. They have resorted to partitioning off the room now, because they can't even fill all the table with the JUNK sellers.

I can't remember the last time I actually bought a GUN at a gun show, wait a minute, yes I do, it was before the new law went into effect. When you could do a partial TRADE into something you wanted to try out. I buy most of my firearms online now, FTF, or out of some of the shops in town. I do pick up some ammo and a few accessories at the shows, when they have it, which is becoming less and less frequently. I'm buying more of these items online as well.

If you decide to do it...GOOD luck.

Pickenup, what shops do you frequent? I'd love to know where the better deals are. I'm in Highlands Ranch, but I'm willing to drive a bit.

Don't know how much shows have changed - havent' been to one in 8 years. But, back then, when I went (and a lot of my friends as well) I was looking for small parts/pieces, mags, ammo (especially!), etc. where the shipping would've been half of the bill. Getting to see lots of guns my local shops never had was a bonus, but I never really had money to buy an actual gun.

Ten years ago, most people setting up at gun shows were individuals..people trading or selling guns they actually had tried or thought they wanted.

Deals abounded, and trades were welcomed.

Today, the jack-booted thugs have scared away most private sellers..and we are left with retailers, making a living selling guns. They mostly aren't interested in trades..not knowing the value of guns will do that to you..and the 'Blue Book' is their Bible..at least for their stuff. Your stuff is mostly junk, you see...

I have bought only a half-dozen guns from a gun show in the last 3-4 years..and that off guys back. Used too..I would buy or trade that many daily at the shows. Taking them out and shooting them...then trading and selling them off to upgrade.
