What is the deal with shipping Beer...???

I cannot seem to get a clear answer. I talked to someone who told me that there was a loophole where you could declare it as yeast...or something to that effect. Is there a way to legally ship beer? There are a few folks I'd like to send a 6 pack to...Thanks!

For our anniversary my wife enrolled me in a beer of the Month Club and it was shipped by DHL and then UPS so I would think it would be legal for an individual to ship. I'm sure the rules vary per state law.

The post office told me that I couldn't ship it, so the beer magically became empty beer glasses and all was well.

Eric - it varies from state to state. Most home brewers adopt a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Wrap the beer well so that if it breaks it won't leak out of the box. If you were to be caught, it is not likely they would do anything for a 6 pack of beer. People send beer all the time to other people and institutional places like Sam Adams annual beer brewers contest.
