Got some odd purchases on my debit card.

I was calling my bank's automated balance checker last week to make sure all my purchases went through. One popped up that got my attention. It was for $2.00 [:0]. I thought that's odd. Then on Saturday I got the bank statement. Few things confused me.

There was a purchase at Subway. A Subway in Smyrna, GA. Yosh-man never got out East beyond Phoenix, AZ. Actually there was two purchases at said Subway on 7/24. Also Yosh-man don't do Subway.

Then there were two at Metro pcs in Washington. So I spent a bit talking to my bank's "claim operations". Since I shred before looking at my bank statements I don't know how long this was happening. Yes I tried looking at my "on-line" bank crap but I'm too stupid to get to my statements there. So I might be assed out if I can't dispute others if there were more unless I pay $5 (which I might pay to get).

So looks like I'll be paying more attention to my bank.

I use my credit card for almost everything. If thieves get the number I might have to pay but it doesn't come straight out of my account.

I balance my checking account using the online balance feature at least once a week.

I check on Line every few days.

But both my Accounts will notify me if something is strange. Like charges on the east coast and at the same time Charges in my area. Fastest way to get my Account frozen till I call them to either Approve or verify they are not mine.

Normally have a new card in just a couple of days.

Immediately change your PIN. Then talk to the bank about replacing the card. You've been hacked. They always start with a small charge or two to see if the card and PIN are good. Then they wipe you out.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Like Rocky said. Happened to me, via a tanning place in Indiana -25 dollar charges for six months. Just noticed it one time when looking through my paper statement one day. TRYing to pay more attention now.

Debit card fraud is much more serious than credit card fraud, CHANGE IT.

And Subway is better than Taco Bell any day.

So you got a new surfboard? This would be the first surfing topic I have seen on GB

With a debit card, you are stuck!

With a credit card, you can dispute the charge and if wrong, you are credited back.

    I don't have a debit card and won't have one .. no protection what-so-ever!

BTW ~ I also have ZERO auto deduct from my bank account. Once they got your $$, it's tough to get it back when they are in error.

And, I review every statement for everything because it's not uncommon for extra charges/fees to be added that shouldn't be. And every bank statement is justified by total review. Banks do make errors 'cause they are operated by humans who make errors!

my debit cards are fully covered, it has happened 2x to me, the last time i checked into a hotel in VA the purchased 600 in car part in CA a few hrs later then purchased 3 100 dollar gift cards online

i called the bank, stopped the card and money was returned the next morning

Debit cards are dangerous. I will not use them at all.

Cancel it and get a ATM card and a credit card. I have a Chase Bank Visa and it has been "Hacked" 2 times.

Chase was all over it and contacted me. One time was when I was in Africa they knew I was there and a purchase was made on my card in CA. The called my cell phone in Africa(I gave them my number). Told me about it and shipped a new card to me via the US Embassy.

Big difference in federal law between debit & credit cards.

Never have a debit card linked to a bank account. A few banks give you protection, most don't.

Credit cards are fully protected by federal law. The bank must cover the loss.

The $1 or $2 charge is a test to see if the stolen number will work; if it passes that test, the hacker sells it over the dark web to thieves in the US & other countries.

Your greatest exposure is when you use a card in a restaurant, even if it doesn't leave your sight. At the end of the day, a restaurant employee gets a printout to reconcile charges/tips; if the employee is careless or less than honest....you have been hacked.

I had that happen to me two years ago, but the charges were in New York and there was also a shoe purchase at one of the shoe store chains.

We were at a gun show in Waco over a weekend and two credit card numbers were compromised or stolen at the Best Western we were staying in (the card we used to make the reservations and the one that we used for the room charges). I caught the fraudulent transactions the following Monday and got on the phone with both Credit Card companies. The cards were immediately closed, new ones issued, and I wasn't held responsible for the charges. I contacted Best Western's Corporate Offices and they said they would investigate, but I never got a straight answer as to the results. We don't stay at Best Western's any more!!!!!!!

I only keep 50.00 in my debit card at any one time, and only add the amount of any thing I buy on line, a call to the bank adds the amount to my debit card in minutes.eastbank.

Then you need to change banks. It's not like that at my bank.

Not to be pedantic, but $2.00 is even.

I'm more of a cash kind a guy (low tech). If I'm short at a grocery store or Best Buy I'll use the debit card. I'm thinking maybe 6 times a year (but most likely less). Basically the debit card is used to get cash from my bank's ATM. So I don't know where they got the card number and my pin number. Oh I use that card for my internet and occasional ebay/paypal.

The bank is sending out the new card and I'll change my pin when I get it. I also only keep enough cash in the account to float checks.

Oh they made me write a "I dispute these charges".

wpageabc - I thought $107 to Metro PCS was the big hit. That was after the $2.00 went through.

us55840 - Well I told the bank people I haven't been to Georgia for a foot long. And the Metro PCS "purchase" was in WA and I was at my LGS picking up my G23C. And they have cameras [:D].

Sam06 - My bank card is one of those debit/credit card combo with that "chip" I don't like.

Looked up my past transactions and it seems I got clued in early.

That $2.00 "purchase" that caught my attention when I called for my bank balance really saved my *. Now I get to wait to see if I'll get my cash back (the way some of y'alls are talking).

For your credit cards use virtual card numbers for all on-line or telephone payments. That way you are not giving out your real information. The virtual numbers can only be used at the one location & only for the amount & time you set up.
