Zionism

In some discussions that I've read on this forum and elsewhere, I've seen the term "Zionism" or "Zionist" bandied about. That always raises my antennae because in my experience it can be a code-word for anti-Semitism. I'm not accusing anyone here of that, but it does raise some questions.Zionism was the name given to the international "movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel" [Jewish Virtual Library definition] in 1893 by Nathan Birnbaum. Theodor Hertzl convened the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and is generally credited with getting the movement started. The Zionists finally achieved their goal when the British Mandate ended and the modern state of Israel began in 1948.The founding of Israel cannot be viewed separately from the experiences of the Jews in the Diaspora, including centuries of persecution during inquisitions and pogroms, leading up to and including the Holocaust of the Second World War. Correctly or incorrectly, the consensus of the major powers in 1948, including the United States, was that the dynamic of persecution could be permanently changed only with the creation of Israel as a home and safe haven for Jews worldwide. So what does it mean when someone calls a Jew a "Zionist" today? Doesn't a Zionist mean a Jew who supports the continued existence of the modern state of Israel? Or are those who use that term trying to say that Zionists are Jews who support everything Israel does no matter what? That's not now and never was what Zionism means. If you are someone who uses that term, please enlighten the rest of us as to what you mean.
