Starting in 1942 16-Year-Old Princess Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service despite the protests of her father. She pulled her weight working on a variety of trucks, motor vehicles and going through training to learn to drive all of them. Her time driving those vehicles gave her a dislike of being chauffeured and the 91-year-old queen still insists on driving herself around the United Kingdom.

I often remind my children that even the Queen of England works, and they are nothing special. I tell them she launches ships opens libraries and hospitals. Somebody has to do it. Now I will also tell them about mechanic work and driving at 91 years. [}:)]I may also mention it to some other unemployed people I know.[}:)]

just gotta wonder where she would drive to, she has to have secret service or equivelant, and wouldn't they follow her everywhere? not like she is running down to walmart to get bag of chips and sixpack.....

While I am certain that a security detail is there, she drives where she wants- including driving herself to church on Sundays.

When I was in Edenbourgh quite a few years ago several people poined to a car coming down the street saying, 'There's the Queen'. All I saw was the back window down a bit & a gloved hand gently waving. That was in the area between the church she goes to & the castle she was staying in at the time. I couldn't see any special security.
