Colt Armory in Hartford/Where's the Museum?

Well, I was in Connecticut for a few days, finished my business early and on the way to Bradly Airport decided I'd do what some people suggested and visit the Colt Museum. Some of the folks I visited on the business trip described the old factory to me, and I recalled seeing it when I arrived, along I-91. They said there was a great museum and thought, since I had about 6 hours to kill before my plane took off, I'd try to find the museum.

I stopped downtown, went to a convenience store to try to get some directions. Never ask an obviously Isamic canvenience store clerk the directions to anything that has something to do with Colt in Hartford. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I stopped at the Crown Plaza and picked up a map of area attractions. I didn't see any museum, but saw there was a Colt Park close to the old factory, so thought I's see if maybe the museum was around there.

Oh, the old Colt factory is really something, as far as delapadated buildings go. When I first saw it, I really thought it had to be a Islamic Mosque or something. It has one of those big tear shaped domes, painted blue with white stars speckling it. When I got close, I could see a gold globe on top of the dome, and sure enough, there was a gold prancing pony on the very top. The windows were all busted out and the factory was in poor shape. But it certainly did make my immagination come to life, thinking of the history surrounding the place. It was really pretty neat.

But I couldn't find any museum. I thought this guy had told me it was a bit south of Hartford, so thought I'd make another try. Another convenience store, this time with a real American clerk, close to the old factory. I thought sure he would know something about it, being as close as he was to the old factory. He said sure, just go here, left, there, left, and I realized he was directing me back to the old factory. I asked if he was sure there was a museum there. He said yeh, he was pretty sure about it. So I figured I musta missed it my first try. I went back again.

There are really some old buildings and such around the factory, actually it's a pretty slummy area now. But in driving around the factory looking for the museum, it was interesting that there were some apartments across the street from the factory, in pretty much the same style. I would swear that, in there day, they probably housed many of the factoy workers, the similarity in the buildings was just that close. It was as though Colt had built the buildings for the workers. That would be my guess.

I still couldn't find any museum. But I did get out and walk around the outside of the old factory a bit, getting as close as I dared, as it seemed possible a wino or junkie may leap out from a doorway at any time. Got a good look at the dome. Again, the history was just overwhelming.

Still no museum. I couldn't find any Colt museum on any tourist info, but I've been told it's there somewhere. Can anyone let me in on it's whereabouts, the next time I get up that way?

Went to the air museum instead. Had some pretty nice old warbirds there, but would have rather looked at Colt stuff.

To err is human, to moo is bovine.

The Colt Collection is located in the State Library building. The State Library is located accross the street from the Capital building on Capital Avenue. In the State Library is the Colt collection that was given to the State by the Colt Company years ago. The collection contains many handguns that are on display but many are not. The guns on display are rotated with those not on display during the course of the year.
