I have a set of Dewalt pilot point bits that are dull as all get out. Would a drill doctor be worth buying to re sharpen them, or would it take to long since I believe that I'd have to grind the pilot part off? Thanks.

I'm not sure a DD would sharpen the larger diameter but probably the pilot section would sharpen OK.

My DD goes up to 1/2" and with some practice will do all sizes.
If you buy one follow the directions exact [;)]

I don't know about pilot points, but iMovie mine, the first one I got was the ones you used your drill to power, after I sharpened a few I went ahead and got the bigger self powered unit, saved a lot of money.

if you have any type of bench motor grinding wheel taking that pilot point off will take but mere seconds. and as you get better you will learn how to sharpen drills without the DD. most hardware stores will sell a cheap drill gauge. a protractor thingy[:)], that will show you the correct angles to sharpen each side and get them even. if you grind more off 1 side than the other then the drill cuts the hole oversized.

If that is the only bits you need to sharpen why not buy a set of drill bits and you will have money left over for beer and the Casino?

I bought a drill Dr awhile back, think it was like the 750 series, (goes up to 3/4 inch bits.

I had several large piles of drill bits to sharpen and found that for the larger bits, about 7/16 and up I needed the coarser stone to speed up the sharpening process, but finished with the standard OEM fine stone supplied with the Drill Dr.
I also thought I knew how to sharpen the large drill bits (and others) for drilling steel. Sure good that I tested the bits before sharpening all. First few I sharpened would not drill, especially the larger ones.
I used a marks A lot pen to color the end of the bit so as to get a equal grind across the face and found that for the larger bits I needed to do a 10 degree positive relief grind instead of a standard 118 degrees for the large bit to drill into mild steel. (you cannot see the difference in 118 degrees and a positive relief of 10 degrees but you can tell the difference when you test the bit by drilling)
Summary: Check the bits as you sharpen them or you might come up with bunch of bits that look great but won't drill a hole into warm margarine.

Pilot points need to be done with either hand tools or a dremmel and hand tools. The Drill Doctor will not handle the double points...[:I]

The model 750 does pilot point drill bits.

My bench grinder does ANY type of steel bit.[:D]

I cheat. I own a Darex with diamond wheels. I only buy Cobalt drills.

I bought a cheap knock off drill doctor from Harbor freight and it works great. It took a lot of practice and I ruined a few a long the way, but yes, it did a great job. I hate throwing out old bits because they are so expensive and I use them almost every day. The one thing about the DD from HF is that you have to check them out first. The first two I got, the wheel was out of balance. The one I got now is fantastic. Oakie

I also wanted to add that it will do any size up to 1/2" in the top and larger ones it has a separate wheel.
