Gun Storing ?

I keep almost all my guns in safes except the ones around the house. I was thinking of putting them in silicone gun socks.

I have 5 pistols in soft sided cases because i do not have enough room so i have to stack them up.

Are soft sided cases good or bad. The guns are well oiled. Or would a pistol sock be better?

Thanks David

Gun socks are good, because they prevent most dings & scratches. But, the silicone hasn't been shown to make any difference; you still need to control moisture in the air, & changes in ambient temperature.

Soft sided cases are fine for transporting guns to the range. For storage purposes, they are BAD. Changes in the air temperature cause condensation on the zipper, & the closed case ensures that the moisture is kept close to the gun.

I double-up, with them in a sock and in a case. Has worked very well for me. I really think the socks help.

Put them in a gun sock, inside a soft sided gun case, inside a gun safe.

if you live in a high humidity area, the soft case will be nothing but a moisture wick and your gun will be rusting in short order, whether you have it in a sock or not. having a dehumidifier in your gun case is a necessity if you are in such an area.

Doesn't get much more humid than Houston, and mine never rusted a bit....

I use the gun socks , just if nothing else to help prevent any scuffs or minor bumps even in the safe .
    so far no issues
I use to wrap my pistols with the treated paper ( like the paper S&W use to use or maybe still do ? ) to prevent corrosion a couple times than put them on a pistol case .
    never had a problem .
I have seen too many guns rusty from long term storage just in a storage / transport case I am sure countless firearms have been ruined over the practice [:(]

In my opinion if you keep your guns in a house that's air-conditioned year around it wouldn't really matter what you store them in. It's when there's a big temperature change and moisture is allowed to condensate is where you get in trouble.

I keep most all my guns in a safe except for a couple of cheap ones like the Winchester Model 1200 riot pump shotgun that I keep by my bedside and it's not rusted one bit in the 15 or 16 years it's been sitting there. I rarely ever clean it other than wipe the lint off of it every other year or so. I also have an old Spanish made copy of a S&W M&P .38 special revolver that's been lying behind my tool box on my workbench in the basement for the past 4 or 5 years and it's not rusted either.

    +1

A light coat of oil and in a AC house is pretty much all it will ever need...if in doubt check the hardware of furniture in your house....it will tell you what's happening to steel in the house.

Remoil after use and in a safe with a desiccant de-humidifier. Stopped using socks when it became a pain to find the rifle you were looking for in a sea of grey.

I keep them in a room that has a constant temperature of 60-65 degrees with not a lot of humidity, probably around 50%.

It's also a lot easier to look into your safe and check for any rust on your guns when there's no gun socks or anything else on them that requires removing to look at.

I live in the desert and use nylon soft cases for handgun storage. I use golden rods as well. It stores them in minimum space with a place to hang an ID tag. Humidity is not a concern for me.

Dave, with all those grandbabies, I would get a cheap stack on safe for those handguns. If I find one, I will send it to you. Oakie
