Gonna' go and get a new deer rifle.
Yesterday had a customer in the store who told me that the greatest deer cartridge was the .204 Ruger, with a 45 grain soft point.
Said there is no recoil, the bullet doesn't drop, even out to 400 yards and that a whitetail deer shot in the shoulder at 200 yard, the offside should blows clean off. Also, uses the 45 grain to shoot antelope at 400 yards. Says they just fall over.
Boy do I feel stupid........All these years I have dragged through the woods, fields and swamps, with .308's, .30-06, .35 Rems. and even used a 7 mm Rem. Mag once. All that recoil and having to remember and figure out bullet drop, man, I am just sick as to how dumb I am that I never knew about this great cartridge.
So, tomorrow, I am going to through 7 or 8 of those old rifles I've got in the truck and head over to a Gander Mountain and see if I can trade them off and not too much cash and get me one of those .204 Ruger deer slayer rifles.
Now, don't even ask me to even think about listing those rifles of mine here on GunBroker, as there is no way I want to stick any of you guys with a no good deer rifle. Better to do it at a Gander mountain, their customers will never know.
Glad I found all these out now, as now I will have time to work up a good 45 grain soft point load before November.
Oh yeah, guys, PLEASE don't tell the warden about my new rifle, as the .204 Ruger ain't legal for deer in Wisconsin, just keep that to yourselves, OK? Thanks.

Capt. Jack Sparrow.
Not legal for deer in any state and for good reason.
Lots of meat loss.[:)]
Shoot'em in the shoulder and their * falls off.
Side benefit, they can't run off if'n yer a half inch to high or low.
You'd love the 7x57 rong.

That's why you shoot meat deer just to the rear of where the ears meet the back bone if possible. Nothing wasted.
Trophy deer. Not a good idea.

^^^^I use the 45 grainer, but only because it is a bit more consistent in my .22-250.

Either one is good for making a deer go DRT.[^][:)]

What a coincidence....[;)][^][:D]

Stick with the inaccurate, underpowered .30-06, and be a MAN.
I also use the .280 Remington. Wimpy, but gives the deer a chance. One shot, one kill. That's a chance, right? [:D]
