I have hunted all my life, started going with my dad and uncles as soon as I was big enough to carry their game. we trained and raised, beagles * dogs and running dogs (coyote / fox hounds)for many years. still do but not like back then. its getting hard to go hunting because all the old timers have sold off a lot of land around here into 5-10 acre tracts. and todays rural people are not as accepting or pleasant , don't want you on their property such as that. since my dad and uncles have passed its not anything like it used to be but my brother and I still run dogs and do some deer hunting, small game. mostly to be out there with the kids but they don't get excited about it like I always did when I was younger.
I grew up around guns. My Dad took us target shooting, not hunting. But I think he had some hunting experience.
I just never had any interest in hunting.
I haven't hunted in many years, I live 1/2 mile from a Publix and have no need to kill for food nor do I feel the need to kill something just for sport.
"Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you"
Only Elk, Antelope & Javelina anymore.
I need to walk, eat healthy, keep perishable skills current, & all 3 of those critters gimme a chance for it.
Slowing down on Elk though, too dam big to quarter out & carry 2 miles back to the truck 6 times, especially if it snowed much.
Last Elk I got was in the Jemez, on an either-sex hunt; he stepped out from behind a tangle of burnt trees, looked at me, put his head down & I swear I heard him say,"Oh, Shnit!".
I hunted for more than forty years. A couple Canadian provinces and four states but haven't applied for any tags now for a few years. I get to see and even work with big game from time to time but I have just mostly lost interest in hunting them. I do buy a hunting license every year incase I have a run in with a lion I'll be covered.
For the last 15 years or so, I began my journey into the realm of Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett.
That is to say my interest in our countries history got me into shooting traditional black powder rifle's and pistols.
I built my first longrifle from a plank of wood equipped with store bought barrel, lock, and brass furniture, and even cast my own lead round balls for the gun.
Had hunted deer with my older brother since we were kids. We hunted public lands close to our home but that became over populated with too many city dwellers with itchy trigger fingers.
These days, due to health issues, I have had to resort to the kind of hunting most here on this site look down upon. That is from a stationary ground blind with a bait pile nearby on my own 6 acre parcel of woodland.
I use the flintlock rifle I built and have taken quite a few deer over the last few years. I am a meat hunter and find antlers only good for making knife handles, powder measures, and dog chew toys.
I still go deer hunting more because my son comes up and the rest of the crew expects me to be there. I've shot enough deer in my life so I don't care if I shoot one or not. This year I fired 2 shots, 2 dead deer. I much prefer coyote hunting. 99% of the time all I carry is my BFR. Dave
I do not hunt. I would rather pet an animal than shoot it. I do respect others rights to hunt. I also eat meat. I like to shoot everything from 22 target, trap to HP rifle.
I love to get out in the woods. Every bit as much as the next guy and probably more so. White tail hunting is sort of a religion here in Michigan.
I have never had much luck with it though. Like so many others, I am not really into the public land hunting. We have some private land to hunt, but rarely see any deer during daylight hours. Always lots of evidence that there are deer around.....but very few to even aim at.
As much as I hate to say it, I think the "old fashion" hunting is all but gone the way of the horse and buggy. If you really want a shot at a nice buck you just got to go to a ranch, drop the big cash, pick one out, and bag your trophy. It doesnt seem all that sporting, kinda like hunting at the zoo.
I havent hunted every year since I was 14.(28 years and running) And I have only ever seen two bucks that were "shooters"
My last four years of hunting, I went out between 6 to 10 times per year. Usually between 3-6 hours each time. Perhaps a little over a hundred hours in the last 4 years........I have seen 3 deer.
I will probably continue to go out in the woods, but it is simply therapy for me. I enjoy sitting in the woods and relaxing and clearing my mind. Maybe some day I will be able to afford a trophy hunt and bag a buck.
I did go to Texas in October and paid for a hog hunt. I bagged three hogs. So paying to shoot guaranteed game is not beneath me. I appreciate others who have the opinion that, that is not real hunting. It is certainly a different kind of hunting.
I have good friends who are hunters, and I see the need for hunting to control populations that would otherwise be out of control (e.g., whitetails). And I love guns dearly, have maybe 300 handguns and long guns. But I don't hunt. Despite relatives who hunted when I was growing up, I just never could get into it. As I've gotten older, I've decided to live more and more with the agreement that I won't attack critters if they don't attack me. (Well, I eat hamburger, etc., so I guess I'm a hypocrite. Those steers didn't attack me. [:I])
Spend most of my hunting time these days looking for cool old .22's. I used to be a frothing at the mouth deer and hog hunter, guess I'm just not mad at 'em anymore. I do still grow fangs and one eyebrow at the sight of a red squirrel or woodchuck though.
I am 65 years old. When I was younger I was an avid deer hunter and have killed over 105 whitetails. Lots of wild hogs too.
I had slowed down in my hunting the past few years. The story Dennis posted about Little Buck just ruined it for me and I just can't hunt any more.
When I was tearing up the woods of Georgia as a 30 year old hunter I noticed that there were very few old hunters. I knew some 60 year old guys who had given up deer hunting.
Now I know why.

I have not hunted in 12 years.
To many idiots - drunks - morons - losers out in the woods.
It's almost impossible to hunt in NJ now.
Pennsylvania near me is so overcrowded you might as well be hunting in a full concert hall - bumping elbows with folks.

Yep on all he said. Last time out I was shot at.

I've found as I get older, time to hunt has reduced.
not even sure why... [:(]

I hunt, I just don't kill.
