How good are you at judging range? What methods do you use?
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I'm not...so I use my accu reticle on my scopes, or my front sight post as it's a known width.

Without those tools I am a pretty bad judge of distance, with them, I do ok.

I live in flat lands so it may be easier I think I can judge range fair obviously the further out the less accurate I imagine I would be.

Experience and landscape, trees are shorter further away :)
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Getting better. I've always tried to judge distance by football yardage. Ten yards, 100 yards, etc. I sat on the bench enough to know it's ~55 yards to the other sideline.
I've ran a lot of ridgid and thin wall conduit in my time so I can guess ten, twenty, fifty feet pretty good.
If there's elevation between me and the target, all bets are off.

So So. I use the halving or bracketing methods. However, if I were still in the business of shooting, which I have not been for the past thirty-five years, I would use other or sophisticated aids.
    What's next?

Is this some trick question about tailgating?

Soccer and football play was a big help for me. Those 100 yard run backs go a long way in depth perception.

Used to be very good now if I need to range more than 200 yards I would need some kind of help.

I use binoculars to see a target that a bullet hit at 30 to 50 yards. My lookers won't see a bullet piercing a little tiny hole at 30+ yards.

there he is= dead on hold

well look there=hold at the top of the kill zone

look yonder= hold at the top of the spine

he's a fair ways= hold mid neck level

he's out there= hold at the top of the ears

now, that's a ways= let's see if we can get a little closer

I have always been very good at range estimation. I do have a laser rangefinder now and take it along where I expect the possibility of shots at 300+ but I am usually within +/- 5% estimating before ranging.

    When in doubt, I hit a 7-iron.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Enemies of armed self-defense focus on the gun. They ignore the person protected with that gun.
