Let me start by saying thanks to all of you for the advice. Just by sitting at the computer together spending "Quality Time" reading your replys has helped smooth things over. Matt 45, and Idsman75 you were both right, The real reason she was upset wasn't really the money at all. She doesn't see why I need another gun, let alone a more expensive one than she thought I was going to buy. I explained to her that I only have 4 guns. Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage for U.P. DeerRemington 870 express magnum for Lower Pennisula Deer, Rabbit, and U.P. GrouseS&W Model 65 (Former Duty Weapon)And now the new Springfield (New Duty Weapon)I told her that I was sure that many of you had many more guns than I did, and that each gun has a purpose. I am going to take your advice and try to get her involved in shooting. I would like our marriage to last at least as long as Rafter S's 41 years. She really liked Richy Riches reply, about buying her diamonds. What purpose do they serve? Just kiddin. If you could, do me just one more favor? Please reply with how many guns or weapons you have, so that she can see that I am not the second coming of David Koresh. Thanks again.Thom

Mrs. Mac:I started to list number by types & ownership (incl. my wife & children), but decided I didn't wish to make that data public. I will say I fall between your husband and AntiqueDr. Firearms are tools used to enjoy the shooting sports. Just as a golfer has many clubs or a mechanic many tools, up to a point each serves a different purpose. Your husband's assembly is very modest, largely a set of 'adjustable wrenches' to fit many situations. In all sincerity, clearly he has chosen his firearms for their utility, which allow him to enjoy a wide range of shooting activities w/o being excessive in any way. And if you should allow him to introduce you to shooting, you would be surprised to discover that the average woman is far better at it than the average man (the superior hand-eye coordination / manual dexterity things). And that the pleasure of mastering those skills transcends the macho image of the activity . . . or so I've been told many times; of the 50 or so women I've taught to shoot over the years, only one did not elect to continue in it at some level.

15 rifles (all very expensive & accurarate)2 pistols ( one huge with kick, one small with kick)Relaxation at the range with a few "handrolled" bullets is what I call fun.

I am only 21 and in college and don't have any money anymore but that is only because I am known on campus as the guy with all the guns. Every weekend I take 3 or 4 guys out and we just have a blast shooting things. It really is a great stress reliver. I have over 20 of them currently. Also, if you take care of them they are a great store of value.

mcneely77,Its all a balancing act! Personally my wife doesn't care what I buy as she knows I only buy at my price and there is at least a 90% chance that if I decide to sell it, I'll at least get my money back out of it ... needless to say I rarely buy new; After all, why should I take the hit by paying retail when I can let someone else pay it?Un-expected gifts DO work wonders though ... as long as you DON'T only get them when you get a new toy ... they are appreciated much more. You don't want her saying something like; "Oh honey those are nice diamond earrings ... what did YOU buy ?" For instance, when my wife got pregnant she had to quit wearing her rings (swelling), after the baby came along and swelling went down, they were still to tight (gained a little weight), I told her I would have it re-sized and took it to my jeweler, he made it bigger and while it was there traded out the 1/3 karat solitaire for a full karat. When I got it back I just left it on her desk (in the original box I'd saved) and told it was back and on her desk ... talk about getting mauled ... and don't think for a minute that her friends didn't notice her new diamond ... then when she tells them she knew nothing about it until she opened it ... you are the stuff!*Edit*I doubt that it will help, as I'm sure your wife doesn't care, but I have 20 rifles, 17 handguns and 1 shotgun ... I've been thinning out things I haven't shot in 2+ years and duplicates ...
Here's a thought: Let's make criminals responsible for their crimes ... ...Not blame society and the tools they use!kimberkid@gunbroker.zzn.com [This message has been edited by kimberkid (edited 02-26-2002).]

Tell her Mrs. H tolerates 84 gun's in the house today. That number varies between 100 and 50. After she got into shooting, she wanted 1 for herself. That number is now 6. NOW she understands! She also plans to outlive me and sell the complete collection. I think my son will have something to say about that!

I am selective and tend to buy and sell, maintaining an average of maybe a dozen or so guns at any one time, enough that I can keep them all maintained and shoot each occasionally. I have bought and then sold an Uzi, an AR15, a SPAS-12 shotgun, and at least a half dozen different Glocks in different sizes and calibers. Right now I have one shotgun, one carbine, one rifle, one modern .45 with 3 mags for defense, one vintage .45 with 3 mags for defense, one modern .40 with 7 hi-capacity mags for defense, one .44 stainless revolver for backup defense, and an old (inherited from my Dad's dad) pre-WWII .32 Mauser handgun. Will I buy more? Sure will, as soon as I get past this laid-off thing. Collecting is a hobby, a discipline, a tradition in line with the Second Amendment. I just don't care for Beanie Babies or muscle car restoration projects.

'bout 15 rifles, a few pistols, a couple of black powder rifles, and a couple of shotguns, but I just got started not long ago.About those diamonds: They are actually pretty common stones, and not nearly as pretty as some of the colored pecious stones. The price is kept artifically high by DeBeers diamond cartel, and if they keep you out of the doghouse, they are worth every penny!

My wife claims all I need is "a short gun and a long gun". I told her I would agree if she would conceed she only needs a summer coat and a winter coat.Needless to say I still have about 15 guns.PS every clothes shopping trip is equal to the 1/2 the value of my average gun. In 10 years she won't have the cloths but I'll still have the guns (Second Amendment Permitting). [This message has been edited by dakotashooter2 (edited 02-26-2002).]

Don't have enough fingers and toes to count. Always after more, but I can sleep at night knowing that if the one with the most toys wins and the one with the least looses, I won't be at either end of the line. I'm comfortably in the middle.

Geez, I never thought about it but my gun safe has one or two guns from the following manufacturers: Ruger, Ithiaca, Remington, Smith & Weston, Walther, Colt, Marlin, Darne, and Universal (a poor quality M-1 carbine). My small gun safe is full and I can think of several rifles and a couple of handguns that I need(or more appropriately want)! I am not sure that if I was turned loose in a well stocked gun shop and allowed to get everything I wanted that day that I would be satisfied for very long. Too many neat guns out there to only acquire 100 or so. I consider them low yielding, understandable and useful investments. Your children will most likely remember a gun left to them far more than other less useful assets you can give them.

Too darn many. Keep running out of places to put them. But, I really don't mind building gun racks. Gives me something to do when I don't have the money to buy any more guns.Main problem is that lumber is way too expensive. A person can buy a gun for what they want for the lumber to build a rack that will only hold a couple dozen.

Round figures, bout a hundred... new, used, abused, or still in the box. Have some that have never been shot, and some that I will probably never shoot. Plus a few I will probably wear out soon.

Mc and Mrs Mc, I have approx 20 guns and growing. I have a mixture of long and hand guns, and as Kimber said enjoy the wheeling and dealing. In 2001 I bought 8 new guns, and since Christmas, I have bought 5 new guns as of today. In the latest realm, and HK USP .45, a desert eagle .41 mag, a Para ordnance P14 light alloy (owned it one day, traded it on the next one), a Para ordnance stainless P 14 with some work done to it, and today a Marlin 1895 CB in 45/70 govt. The key in our household is not the idea of how many, or need, but rather the fact that the children and the wife have all their needs met fully before I buy any toys. Also, I am currently replacing the collection I sold to go to bible college in the early 90's. My wife understands that guns and shooting are what I do for enjoyment, and she knows I will not place the family in financial jeopardy for any reason let alone another gun. Will I buy more, you bet. Good luck in your negotiations. Remember that great marriages are a series of compromises on the both sides. My wife and I celebrated 22 years in January. Good luck

I find your list of guns to be very pratical and similar to my own. I also hunt in the UP with a Savage 99F in .308 and the in southern lower. Beacuse I hunt the MI black powder seasons I have a knight 50 cal as well. I have made a couple of trips out west so I have a flatter shooting rifle for antelope/mulies and a boomer for elk. None of my guns are overly expensive. That Remington 700, Win Model 70 or Savage 110 will shoot as well and probably better than a Weatherby. From my experience of 20 years of marriage, where I went from my first purchase of an 870 to now owning about 20 long guns, go slow in building your collection and be pratical with your purchases and try to find bargains like you will many times find on this site. My wife has come to appreciate how much I enjoy hunting, the shooting sports and collecting and tinkering with long guns so buying another gun has become much "smoother" than years ago. As others have said, a little jewelry purchase every now and then doesn't hurt either. Good luck!
