(Commerce City, CO) - A Colorado grandmother accused of locking her 13-year-old grandson in a
kennel while she was at work made her first court appearance on Tuesday.
The judge issued a restraining order prohibiting June Candelario, 61, from any contact with her 13-year-old grandson.
Candelario has not been officially charged, but she is facing charges of second-degree kidnapping, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment and child abuse. The class three felony could be punishable by 16 years in jail and $750,000 fine.
Commerce City Police say Candelario, a detention counselor, locked her grandson in the kennel each day before heading to work at 4 p.m. She released him upon returning home around 3 a.m. The abuse allegedly went on for three years. The plastic kennel measured 46"x30"x35".
Neighbors say Candelario has been the boy's guardian for seven years, since his mother died. Commerce City Police say the boy is now with protective services.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says she will be suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
