SPRINGFIELD SCOPES????

I am trying to get a Springfield 4-14x56 Scope for my M1A, with a 3rd generation 2 point scope mount, but I see a lot of nay-sayers on these boards in regard to Springfields scopes. What exactly is it that they do wrong? Do they fail to hold zero? Won't they line up right? I believe I can get a SA Scope for $350-$400 for the 4-14x56 off another auction but if the scope is truly no good I will pass. But on the other hand I would like to know why it should be passed.

I was going to get another one, until these folks reminded me why I got rid of my first one to begin with. My first one never did hold a zero. For the money you can get a Burris which is a much better scope. Sure, it won't light up but that don't help anything. I found I never used it. Oh yeah, clarity sux when you turn it up as well.

    Thanks Will270Win

That settles Springfields hash as far as I'm concerned,
if I didn't NEED clarity so bad I wouldn't put on anything more than my Simmons 3-9x40, which is currently sitting on it.
    Thanks for the help!

My Springfield 4-14X56 2nd generation is back in the shop for repair for the 4th time in 4 years, 1st wouldn't hold zero, then the elevation knob exterior HOUSING came loose when I went to take the cover off, then the retical lens started ratteling (loose), now the scale for the elevation knob is floating around on the interior housing or whatever its called. For the $550 I paid, I could have gotten a Leupold or other quality scope but was caught up in the gadgets ... I also have a 4-14X40 Springfield cammed for .223 which I bought at the same time, its never given me any problems ... I think the bigger scope just can't handle the recoil ... even though it is installed with their 2nd generation mount on an Springfield M1A.

They have always gotten it back to me in about 2 - 2.5 weeks ... but as I've said before ... thats not really the point is it?

I just sent an email to springfield asking them if they've had problems with their scopes, and if they did what they've done or are doing to fix them. I wonder what they're reply will be.

    will270win,
Guess I wasn't clear in the way I stated ny thanks to you. Your reply was one of the deciding factors because if I couldn't have clarity when I dialed up the power I would be a lot better off staying with what I have now, at least it won't cost me anything more, and even $350 is a lot for a scope that ain't gonna work.
    is just my symbol.
That thing about the reticle falling out seems to be a constant problem with them as 3 out of 3 of the first replies here and in Ask The Experts all hit on that one.
Thanks to everyone for the input, or else I would have wound up with a $399 1st Generation 4-14x56 paperweight, as the winning bid was lower than what I was planning to bid.

That Tasco super sniper looks good. I think that Burris is the best deal out there. They are pricey, but you can always save a little longer. I'm going to sell my truck stereo for one. i'm gettin' to old for stereo stuff any way.

    will270win,
I just received a couple of those Tasco Titan scopes. One in a 3-12x52, 30 mm tubes, and 1.5-6x42. I haven't mounted either one yet, but they look pretty good so far. You're absolutely right about the Tasco Super Sniper.
That was the model that won the contract for the Navy Seals. From what I understand, SWFA had some made for them or they managed to get a hold of a bunch of them. Now, if you got the money, the way to go is a Schmidt & Bender, I bought a used Weatherby that had a 1.5-6x42 on it, and it is one of the sharpest scopes I've ever owned. I bought the gun just for the scope.

Like leeblackman, I E-mailed Springfield about their scopes, They said that they were not aware that their scopes were falling apart,,,They said that their scopes were very popular and can hold up to a 50 cal. rifle,,And they have a lifetime warranty,,I would like to think this is true, however, I haven't seen much, if any positive feedback on them,, I guess time will tell,,,

"No dear, this isn't a new gun,,I've had this one for quite a long time,,honest,,"

That's what really surprised me too, not even one positive response. I could figure that somebody may have gotten a bad one or two out of all the different scopes they make at/for Springfield, but in 2 different forums not even one person said "I love this old Springfield and wouldn't part with it for the world" The most positive response was "I haven't had a bit of trouble with it".
That just doesn't fill your heart with confidence.
