Is joining the NRA the best thing to do?

Hi I am new to shooting. I just purchased my first gun today. The person who was teaching me how to shoot said he could not beleive that I could shoot like that for my first time. My father was a shooter and his father was a shooter and his father was a shooter. In the present days I hear that the government is trying to take away my right to have a hand gun when I just received that right a few days ago. I do not know much about the NRA but someone sudgested that I help support them to keep my right to bear arms. Is this true????

Yes.....some think their political agenda is too excessive, but no one else gets in the front line fight like the NRA does. Also they provide a ton of support to the National Championships at Camp Perry every year....I'd support them for that alone. They do a good job. Beach

Your second Amendment rights have endured for over 200 years...your responsibility is to insure that it remains as strong as the day it was written for your children and grandchildren....the best way to do that is join the NRA and other organizations who are keeping it strong....There are 4.5 million NRA members, and over 100 million gun owners in America....NRA has been pulling the wagon for a lot of gun owners that prefer to ride along....enjoy your new found right, please help preserve it for future generations..Here is a link to join up.... http://www.nra.org/

There's a topic under General Discussion that you might want to read addressed to those who bought their first gun after 9/11. You might also consider joining the Gun Owners of America = GOA. I'm in GOA (as of today) and NRA as of when I bought my first gun post 9/11.

The NRA isn't perfect but what other organization/lobby is doing more to protect your right to keep and bear arms? You can sit back and let a few people fight for you or you can join us.
Without the NRA, the second ammendment would already be gone!

I hope you don`t live in California like I do. As far as the fight here for us gun owners the NRA has not even put up a scrimmage.

I am from the UK originally but now a proudAmerican. The only bad news is that I also live in California and each year it gets tougher to buy handguns. I would recommend joining the NRA and other organizations and be as active as you can, if we sit back this state may possibly become as bad as the UK, heaven forbid!

NRA hear our plea. Don`t turn a deaf ear. For us (CALIFORNIA) to help other States, we need more help ourselves.

pdf, what have YOU done to help stop the Kalifornia mess? You ARE the NRA. Have you joined the NRA Members Council serving the Pittsburg area?Go to http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/ and find out how to contact the Bay area Councils. After you get up off your fat * and work some, then maybe you can grouss about the NRA not doing enough; you will realize that YOU aren't doing enough and YOU are the NRA.(or go to http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/mc/directory/mc-contact.shtml and see exactly how/who to contact so you can start to help)

A little over a year ago, I moved my family over to the great northwest. I never owned a gun before because where I came from (it was not Kalifornia) everyone thought of guns as "evil". Then I found out that people here carried them. That was a big shock for us because back where we came from, that was taboo. In fact, my older brother was shot and killed because he ran into a bunch of thugs that had a gun, he was not armed because it was illegal there. Well it did not take long for me to get my first gun here. That was probably one of the best thing I had done my entire life. Now I can at least provide some kind of protection for my family should any threat arise (heaven forbids). The next best thing I did was join the NRA. Without the NRA, I would not have been able to buy my first gun or the next 12 guns that my wife and children now enjoy shooting every weekend. We are all properly trained, including the kids, to safely handle a firearm (believe me, I trust my kids handling a gun more than some of the adults at the range). And thanks to the NRA, we can now protect ourselves with deadly force if need be. All law abiding sane citizens of this great country must be allowed to bear arms, it's not only right, it is our Right. We all need to support the NRA. Perhaps my brother would have been here with us today if he was given the right to protect himself??? Join the NRA. GD

ccasey, welcome to the shooting fraternity! It's a pleasure to have you aboard. One other thing which has not been addressed here is that joining the NRA is merely a good first step. To ensure your continued exercise of your Constitutional rights, be sure to get out and vote, to use every opportunity to express positive support for those rights (in conversation, letters to politicians / media, etc.), to recruit others to the group. The battle is on-going and the foe relentless - "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom." Again, welcome!

I lived in California for a long time and I can tell you it isn't as easy to get a letter into the LA Times or Daily News (the Valley) as it is in smaller communities, but I did my share of letter writing and got a few published on the subject of guns. If you do the same, it will help. It's like getting a free ad in the paper, and at what they cost per column inch that's a lot of free advertising for the cause of gun rights in one of the largest newspapers in the country.
"The 2nd Amendment is about defense, not hunting. Long live the gun shows, and reasonable access to FFLs. Join the NRA -- I'm a Life Member."

Well pdf, you are right; I don't KNOW what you do or don't do. However, I can surmise (from your 2 earlier posts) that you are not aware of what the NRA is doing in Kalifornia and that you are not active in your local Members Council. Not intended to be a pi$$ing contest (even the winner is WET) but an effort to get the deadbeats who don't help or work and then bitc+ about the NRA not doing enough.BTW, what does the 1st amendment have to do with any of this? The fact that you haven't earned the right to grouse about what the NRA is or isn't doing doesn't mean that you don't have the right to make a total * of yourself and grouse anyway.

Thanks guys for all your imput I am going to do all kinds of research and join every club that can help save my right. As days go by I find myself wanting more. I live in VA. The law here says that I can only purchase 1 firearm every 30 days so for the next 365 (and beyond) days I will buy a new gun until I am a pro like you guys. I am really learning lots and I am very thankful.

NRA is about the best we have, not perfect but its hard to beat them. Whenever there is a agenda coming up, they are on top of it and so will you. Of corse they do always ask for more money, I am a Life member and only give out when I feel strongly on a certain issue. But I never fail to send out letters to reps or congress when they ask, I feel this is important, and they do all the leg work.
Though I was born to royalty, I was snatched at birth, so treat me as the noble I am!!!

For PDF .44: I used to live in California. I didn't take the flag with me when I left in 1980 because I knew there were still a few Americans living there. I did all I could while living there to fight the gun grabbers. I was an LEO with the ultra-liberal city of the People's Republic of Palo Alto. I stood up for gun rights there and paid a price. Mayor, city manager, and chief on down were VERY anti-Second Amendment. I got involved in campaigns, put stickers on my locker, and even wrote a letter to the local paper blasting the city's idiotic ban on "assault rifles" which was supported by the mayor, city manager, chief, and on down (no wonder I love the Dirty Harry movies). Yep, I paid a hell of a price promotion wise. I became an untouchable. I, and people like me, became part of a list. New officers were told NOT to associate in any way with anyone on that list. But, in the end, it got to be too much (I fought the gun grabbers for ten years) and I relocated to the midwest. I am now on the Board of Directors for the Western Missouri State Shooters Alliance fighting to stop the spread of what happened in California from happening here. For those who criticize those who moved from California, you can only do so much and then it becomes counter-productive. And, those of us in the fight seldom received any help or thanks from organized pro-gun organizations along the way. Don't wait for national organizations to help...start your own local one, even if with but five members. You'll be surprised at how many others are thinking the same thing you are...but whatever you do, fight now before it is too late. P.S. I am a life member of the NRA and will probably join other such groups in the very near future. None are perfect, but if not them, whom?

shootist not one time have I said not to join the NRA. If you are satisfied with them so be it. I`m sure with all the patting on your back you are doing you can win the war out here. I`v always voted for those who are backed by the NRA and I can`t think of that many times they have overturned a bad gun law. This year the gun laws, yet again have changed and next year they will be even worse. shootist I`m sure you won`t miss me so keep up the fight. I would rather move to a State where my vote is not overruled by some bias Judge and I`m not talking just about the gun issue. I don`t intend to be your whipping boy just because I stepped on your sacred cow. I`m not throwing up the white flag I`m just retreating. I do have your permission don`t I SIR? By the way I still think my 280 will do anything your `o6 will.

CC612, just a suggestion. I used to belong to almost every gun support group there was. It occurred to me that maybe I should concentrate my efforts to the most effective groups. So, I now belong to the NRA, life member and Citizens Commitee to Keep and Bear Arms, also a life member. You can pick whoever you want, but I hope you will make your first choice the NRA. Also, I give a lot to the NRA Whittiington Center as I believe someday it will be the only place to hold national matches. It is ran strictly off donations, no NRA dues money is use for supporting it.
