...sport jacket, or short coat for my son for daily winter wear. One of the highest quality, that would be good for cold, windy, wet weather, but not too heavy. Comments and suggestions, please.
What's next?

Is he in Chicago?
I recommend you find out what the English blokes like to wear.

Good point about location. He is in Seattle, and the weather can be nasty, but not to the degree as one would be subjected to in Chicago.
When he wears out the elbows, they make cool leather patches to go on them.

Then rain is going to be your primary concern.

Thanks for the brand name and comment! I am looking for brand names and such. To greater clarify the type jacket/coat that I'd like to get for him, it would be the kind that not only sheds water but one that could be worn for short walks in bad weather, or in weather that is not so cold when unzipped while out and about for a day. A pull out hood would be a plus too.
Kimi, you could move down here to Fl! It's suppose to hit 80 today. No coats necessary.[:D][:D]
Man do I ever envy you! [:D] True story.

You're right at that, Rack.
If he livs in Seattle, first tell him I'm sorry, then tell him to check out Filson: http://www.filson.com/mens/coats-jackets/-1011/
[:D][:D][:D] I totally agree with you HPD! Thanks much for the link!

Thanks, Rack, that's a fine looking piece of clothing! I'm looking now for a store in Tukwila, WA (Southcenter Mall) area that carries Filson coats and jackets!

He can go right down on 3rd Ave.(I think) and go right to the factory. They have a storefront there, and it's just a few(5-6?)blocks from Qwest field. Can't miss it, it has big giant "FILSON" lettering on top of the building. You can see if for blocks.

Thank you. I'll get him there soon and ask him to pick one out.
Would camo be OK ?
Sounds like Gore-Tex would be the best answer, and the ECWCS miltary parka is the cheapest, most versatile, (and best) way to do it, if colors are not an issue.
Comes with hood attached (version one), or detacthable (version two).
If GB doesn't have the right size, Ebay is the next best place to look.
Thanks for the post, however, I believe that he would like to have something different that the camoed Gore-Tex.
