My son just hit a bobcat!

edited February 2011 in General Discussion
He is returning from south Alabama, going up Hwy. 5 and just south of Marion, Al. he hit a "big *" bobcat.
He could hear it making noise and went in to very thick timber to find it. He finally found it about 20 feet up a tree. He finished it off with a his .45.
He can't get it down because the tree has no limbs below it and it is dark as hell.
I told him to go on home and we will go after it tomorrow.
Right now he is looking for where he left his truck.
All this has transpired by text because voice is not working.

He just called and said he was tooling along with the brights on and he saw a rodent of some sort in the middle of the road. Next thing he knows is WHAM!, he hit the cat that was after the rodent.
He is in a Chevy 3500 Duramax Dually.
He stopped and backed up to where it happened, left the engine running, left his lights on, and locked the doors.
When he didn't find anything right away, he went in the timber searching for it.
He found it in the tree and put it out of it's misery.
He had no way to recover it so he made his way back to the highway and located his truck about 800 yards away.
We will be going after it tomorrow.
I hope we find it and I will post pics.

He didn't say where he hit it, but he did do a double tap. He said it was difficult to manage the flashlight and try to aim at the same time.[:(]

Good thinking on his part, bobcats have been using this ruse for years to steal General motors products.

    Cougars use it for Lincoln-mercury

    Ouch! That is funny though.
I've got an '05 Duramax myself. I guess I had better keep them doors locked. [:D]

We had two guys come to work at midnight that had hit a bobcat. They had thrown the cat in the trunk and came on to work. They wanted to know if we would like to see it? They opened the trunk to see a very upset cat cowering in the corner of the trunk. You should have seen them trying to figure out just exactly where the gas tank was so they wouldn't shoot a hole in it while trying to finish off the bobcat.

    Poor cat.
Haven't seen a wild bobcat in years. Growing up, I saw them occasionally outside Spokane, Wash.
I fear there are not nearly as many today as before. Probably due to loss of habitat, more poachers, road kills and the propensity for the last two generations to shoot animals indiscriminately.
I'm chastizing you. I understand the need, in your case, to dispatch a wounded animal.
Poor cat. He was keeping the rodent population down. In his absence there will be more food-spoiling, disease-carrying rodents, no doubt.

That exactly the reason for my OP. Ifn' ole kitty cat had made it 20' up a tree, I probably woulda let him walk, er climb. But there's Ida, and who invited her.[;)]

How do you know the cat needed put down?
Sounds like it might have been a misguided effort or poaching.

the trauma shown on the body of the cat will prove it was a mercy kill.

you think his dad would post it if his son was anything but honorable?

sure hope you are being sarcastic.. next time put a :) face after your bull poop

So can you keep a Bobcat carcass-pelt if you hit with your car?
Might want to check with your DNR on that one.

I know you can with Deer in most states not sure about Bobcats though.

Think you would need a fur bearers license.

I don't think we have to worry about the world bobcat population.

The cat was hit by a truck and in the woods making enough noise that he could be found by following the sound. Then he stayed put to be shot. Healthy bobcats usually aren't very sociable with humans. The boy did the right thing.

I can't imagine a game warden giving him any trouble about it, but if he does give him the bill for the body work. Alabama ain't gonna pay for bobcat damage.

Sorry that happened to the boy. Well, the bobcat too.

The father wasn't there, it was dark and the cat was twenty feet in a tree.
I believe there is reason for doubt.

Sounds like the cat was in pretty good shape to me and may have survived if left alone.

Well fellas, I read all your replies and I can only say that since the cat (animal, not skid steer [:D]), was making noise that he was able to follow, I'm pretty sure it was badly injured and he did the right thing. He is pretty sure he ran over at least a part of it. Remember, it was pitch dark, and very thick under brush and briars he was going through.

Rest assured, he would have done the right thing as far as Alabama laws go.

    Now for the sad update:
We went back to where his truck was parked (he had marked the location with his gps when he got back to the truck), and went into the timber and searched for about two hours and did not find the cat so I guess this sad story has ended.

Reflecting back, it was a pretty dangerous thing for him to do, going in after it like that.
