I gotta ask, what caliber is that little pistol in the pic you posted, in Wallie's latest thread?

.41 RF. The derringer is the COLT Third Model Derringer (Thuer Model). [:)]

That's a sweet little shooter.[:)] I've got a few rounds of copper-cased .41RF in my collection. Been wondering exactly what they would've been used in.

Here's another old picture of it:

Thanks.[:)] I would've never guess that they opened from the side. No doubt it's a collector's item, but have you ever shot it?

You're welcome. I have had it for a long time and never fired it. I've never been one to go to the range and shoot a lot, but I like reading and learning about older guns. I take it that you collect some cartridges. What kinds?

Added: I don't think this gun has ever been fired.

I've been collecting for a little while now. Mostly military stuff, 40mm Bofors, .50cal, 106mm recoilless[8D], stuff like that.

Funny story, my uncle gave me a big plastic coffee can full of miscellaneous ammo a few months ago. About a month ago, I started going through it all, not really expecting to find anything out of the ordinary. Turns out there were several .41RFs, at least a half-dozen old blackpowder .45 Colts, and a few other rimfires I have yet to identify. At least two copper-cased .22WRFs.

So far, I think the best one I've found yet is a Benet-primed .45-70, which is in similar condition to this one.

I've been quite surprised at the condition of everything so far. Nothing is really that corroded, for some of it probably dating to the 1870's or earlier.

I'll dig a few out in the next couple days, and take some pics.

You have got some very interesting old cartridges there. And some of it could take up a lot of room! [:D] Do you have any books as reference guides to use?

Yeah, the top of my reloading bench is pretty well covered in old brass.[:D] The closest thing to a reference book I have is an older copy of Cartridges of the World.

[:D] Reloading and shooting sounds like a lot more fun than reading anyway! [:D]
