Compliments to my local gun shop

We had a gun show here a couple of weeks ago and the choice of .44 Special ammo for my recently purchased Charter Bulldog Pug was poor -- regional "plain wrap" loads, mostly ball ammo, though I did find and purchase 50 rounds of plain wrap with an XTP Hornady bullet. The sellers didn't even know how they were loaded or have any stats on feet per second. (I assume they're average to below average.) I checked out CheaperThanDirt thinking I would have to mail order and pay shipping to get what I wanted. Today I stopped by our largest local gun shop, H&H, expecting slim pickings, and was pleasantly surprised to find CorBon .44 Special as well as Blue Glaser Safety Slugs and .44 shotshells. These were exactly the selection of loads I had in mind for this gun, and I bought some of each. I salute H&H in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for keeping a decent variety of loads for this less popular caliber. They probably saved me a little money in the long run (in shipping) and didn't give me any static about taking my credit card, either. These guys admit they just can't compete with mail order prices at times, but I'm revising the way I look at their business and trying to include them on my shopping rounds. I don't like paying more than I should for gun stuff, but on the other hand if they're truly trying to be competitive I'd rather help them stay in business by giving them my dollars when they work hard enough to earn them than automatically order from a catalog thinking I'll always save -- because I probably won't.

Good show, all around. There was an article in a gun mag some years back about supporting your local gun shop, because tho you may find it for less at Wallyworld, they don't have the same vested interest in the 2nd that a gun store does.

I to believe in supporting my local shop but if you bought your ammo at H&H you paid top dollar AND you paid extra when you pulled out your credit card. I was in H&H today for the first time in years and they have gone down hill in my opinion. They were always high with their prices. They do have a great selection of hand guns but very few long guns. It sounds as if they helped you though and thats all that matters. Did you ever try Tomlinson's in Churubusco? Heck of a nice guy to deal with. Rosie

Rosie --They only get the 3% extra if you charge guns on a credit card, not accessories/ammo. I don't get up to Churubusco much, but I'll keep the name in mind. H&H is not cheap, but they're not as ridiculously high as they used to be. Probably because they went to enough gun shows (before they stopped attending) to realize what people can pay if they have a little patience. Still, as I said, by the time you add shipping the mail order route isn't as cheap as it first appears either.

My mistake offeror. I thought the sign applied to every thing. I made a mental note of some of the prices and checked them at the gun show today and find they are not so high after all. Rosie
